Parkside Stuns No. 7 Wayne State Behind Dominant Pitching, 5–1 Victory

KENOSHA, Wis. – Parkside earned a signature win on Sunday afternoon at Historic Simmons Field, defeating No. 7 Wayne State, 5–1, behind strong pitching and timely offense.

Wayne State (19-3, 3-1 GLIAC) struck first in the opening inning, using two singles and a walk to load the bases before scoring on a passed ball to take a 1–0 lead. Parkside starter Nathan Ciemny limited the damage, recording two strikeouts to strand runners and keep the deficit at one.

Parkside (12-8, 1-3 GLIAC) responded immediately in the bottom half. Benjamin Loyd led off with a single, stole second, and moved to third on a flyout. With two outs, Josh Wicker delivered an RBI infield single to tie the game at 1–1.

The Rangers took control in the fourth inning with a three-run rally. Wicker sparked the frame with a double before Joe Mrowiec laid down a sacrifice bunt to move him to third. Angel Rades followed with an RBI groundout to give Parkside its first lead at 2–1. Later in the inning, Mason Mitacek reached and Nathan Hanel singled to put runners on. A Wayne State fielding error allowed another run to score, and Dylan Sayles was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring in a third run of the inning, extending the lead to 4–1.

Ciemny was dominant after the first inning, earning the win and improving to 3-2 on the season. The right-hander tossed seven innings, allowing just four hits and no earned runs while striking out six. He worked efficiently, inducing eight groundouts and consistently keeping Wayne State off balance, as the Warriors went 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.

Parkside added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Mrowiec drew a walk to start the inning and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Rades. Mitacek followed with a single, and Hanel delivered his second hit of the game with an RBI single to left field, scoring Mrowiec to make it 5–1.

Isaiah Terrell closed out the game to earn his first save of the season, tossing two innings of one-hit relief while striking out two.

At the plate, Parkside totaled nine hits. Wicker (2-for-4, RBI) and Hanel (2-for-4, RBI) led the way, while Loyd added two hits and two stolen bases at the top of the lineup. Sayles chipped in a pair of hits and an RBI as well.
