MARQUETTE, Mich. — Cassidy Arni became the newest member of Parkside's 1,000-point club, but Northern Michigan used a decisive third quarter to pull away for a 65-56 win over the Rangers on Saturday afternoon at Vandament Arena.
Parkside trailed 13-11 after the opening quarter, then Northern Michigan gradually built separation in the second, taking a 27-22 lead into halftime. The Rangers stayed within striking distance behind interior finishes from Lillie Petersen and Lexi Bugajski, but Northern Michigan's rebounding advantage began to show early, as the Wildcats repeatedly extended possessions and finished the first half with a 30-12 edge on the glass.
The Rangers made their best push coming out of the break. Parkside opened the third quarter by trimming the deficit to three and briefly grabbed its first lead when Arni finished at the rim at the 6:05 mark, a bucket that also served as her 1,000th career point and put Parkside in front 32-31. Northern Michigan answered immediately, closing the quarter with a burst that swung the game back in its favor. The Wildcats outscored Parkside 20-16 in the third, turning a one-point Ranger lead into a 47-38 advantage entering the fourth.
Parkside had one more surge late. After spending most of the night chasing, the Rangers cut it to 50-48 with 7:27 left on a Petersen 3-pointer, but Northern Michigan responded with timely perimeter shot-making and steady execution, pushing the margin back to multiple possessions down the stretch and finishing off the nine-point win.
Petersen led Parkside with 13 points, nine rebounds and six assists, while Bugajski added 10 points on 4-of-8 shooting with two 3-pointers. Jaelyn Derlein chipped in nine points and two steals, and Katie Hamill finished with eight points and two steals. Parkside shot 40% from the field (23 of 58) and 28% from 3 (5 of 18), while Northern Michigan finished at 42% (27 of 64) and 35% from deep (8 of 23). The Wildcats won the rebounding battle 45-30, including 12 offensive rebounds, and held Parkside to just two second-chance points.
Northern Michigan was paced by Jacy Weisbrod's 24 points on 10-of-20 shooting, while Alyssa Hill controlled the glass with 18 rebounds to go with eight points. CJ Romero posted 10 points and eight assists, and Sydney Whitehouse scored 10 off the bench.
Parkside now turns the page to postseason play as the Rangers lock in the No. 6 seed in the GLIAC Tournament and will travel to Big Rapids, Mich., to face No. 13 Ferris State in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, March 4, with tip time still to be determined.
