GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – Parkside led from start to finish and leaned on late free throws to secure a 73-68 road win over Davenport on Thursday night at the DU Student Center.
The Rangers (12-11, 7-8 GLIAC) never trailed, building a quick early cushion and then withstanding multiple Panther runs, including a one-possession game in the final minutes. Parkside finished 22-for-29 at the free-throw line (76%) and went 11-for-13 at the stripe in the fourth quarter, helping offset a 4-for-12 shooting clip in the final period.
Cassidy Arni led a balanced Parkside attack with 17 points, going 10-for-13 at the line. Lexi Bugajski added 13 points on a perfect 5-for-5 shooting night, including 1-for-1 from three, and Peighton Nelson chipped in 12 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Katie Hamill finished with 11 points, while Lillie Petersen rounded out five Rangers in double figures with 10 points, six rebounds and four assists.
Parkside set the tone early by holding Davenport to 2-for-12 shooting (17%) in the first quarter and taking a 17-9 lead after 10 minutes. The Rangers opened the night on a 7-0 run and used paint touches and second-chance opportunities to keep the Panthers on the back foot.
Davenport (7-16, 5-10 GLIAC) answered in the second quarter with its best stretch of the game, shooting 11-for-15 (73%) to close the gap, but Parkside stayed composed, scoring 22 in the period to take a 39-33 lead into halftime. The Rangers shot 8-for-17 (47%) in the second and continued to get to the line, going 5-for-5 on free throws in the quarter.
Parkside regained momentum coming out of the break, outscoring Davenport 15-13 in the third to push the lead back to eight, 54-46. Bugajski sparked the early portion of the quarter with a pair of baskets, and the Rangers hit 2-of-3 from three in the period to stabilize the game after the Panthers' second-quarter surge.
Davenport made its final push in the fourth, trimming the deficit down to 64-63 with 3:05 remaining, but Parkside answered with defense and poise at the stripe. Arni finished through contact late and the Rangers closed the final 23 seconds with 5-for-6 free-throw shooting to seal it, including Arni's two makes at the horn.
Parkside finished 23-for-54 from the field (43%) and 5-for-16 from three (31%), while Davenport shot 25-for-62 (40%) and 6-for-19 from deep (32%). The Rangers also controlled the glass 42-35, produced 16 second-chance points, and got 34 points in the paint. Davenport was led by Maddie Geers with 22 points, Nevaeh Williams with 21, and Ellie Toney with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Rangers will head to Allendale next to take on the No. 3 team in the country, Grand Valley State, Feb. 14 at noon CT.
