Ball Movement Fuels Parkside Past Davenport, 76-58

KENOSHA, Wis. – Parkside used a fast start, efficient shooting and crisp ball movement to pull away from Davenport for a 76-58 GLIAC win Saturday afternoon at De Simone Arena.

Parkside (9-9, 4-6 GLIAC) assisted on 22 of its 30 made field goals and shot 50% from the floor (30-of-60), building a wire-to-wire lead after opening the game with a 23-15 first quarter. Davenport (5-13, 3-7) never led, shooting 33% (19-of-57) and 20% from 3-point range (3-of-15) as the Rangers controlled the tempo on both ends.

Katie Hamill paced Parkside with 15 points on 6-of-13 shooting in 28 minutes, while Jaelyn Derlein added 15 points off the bench and knocked down five 3-pointers on eight attempts. Lillie Petersen finished with 13 points, nine rebounds, four assists and four blocks, and Cassidy Arni chipped in 11 points and six assists as five Rangers reached double figures. Peighton Nelson orchestrated the offense with nine points, six rebounds and a career-high nine assists.

Ellie Toney led all scorers with 19 points for Davenport, going 7-of-14 from the floor and 4-of-6 at the line. Maddie Geers added 12 points and seven rebounds, while Nevaeh Williams scored 10 with four rebounds and two assists.

Parkside set the tone early with a flurry from the perimeter. After Arni opened the scoring with a layup off a Nelson assist, the Rangers hit four 3-pointers in the first quarter, including triples from Lexi Bugajski, Hamill, Petersen and Derlein, and took a 23-15 lead after one. Defensively, Parkside protected the rim from the opening tip, recording multiple blocks in the quarter to keep Davenport from getting comfortable inside.

The Rangers kept their foot on the gas in the second quarter, shooting 64% (9-of-14) in the period to extend the cushion. Nelson scored twice in transition and Parkside repeatedly turned stops into early offense, pushing the lead to double digits and taking a 42-32 advantage into halftime. Davenport hung around at the free-throw line, going 7-of-8 at the stripe in the first quarter and 17-of-24 for the game, but could not match Parkside's efficiency from the field.

Davenport's best stretch came early in the third, trimming the margin to seven after an Anna Axtell 3-pointer made it 43-36, but Parkside answered with timely execution. Derlein buried a pair of 3s in the quarter and the Rangers won the period 18-13 to take a 60-45 lead into the fourth.

Parkside continued to make the extra pass down the stretch, finishing with 18 assists to Davenport's eight, and maintained control to the final horn. The Rangers also won the rebounding battle 38-32, even as Davenport collected 24 defensive rebounds and tried to generate extra possessions.

Parkside will hit the road for its first set of GLIAC rematches next week, beginning Thursday, Jan. 29, at Saginaw Valley State in University Center, Mich. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. CT.
