KENOSHA, Wis. – Roosevelt's Marie Outlay drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Lakers to a 69-68 win over Parkside on Thursday at De Simone Arena, handing the Rangers a gut-punch loss in their GLIAC home opener.
Parkside (5-6, 0-3 GLIAC) looked in control for much of the afternoon after building a double-digit lead in the second quarter, but Roosevelt (2-8, 1-2 GLIAC) steadied itself at the line early, surged behind a dominant fourth quarter and won it on Outlay's final shot with no time left.
The Rangers came out sharp and aggressive, opening the game with Cassidy Arni scoring the first four points before Peighton Nelson added a pair of free throws to help Parkside jump ahead 6-0. The lead grew to 9-2 when Katie Hamill knocked down a 3, and Arni continued the early burst with 10 first-quarter points as Parkside finished the opening period up 23-17.
Roosevelt stayed within striking distance by living at the foul line. The Lakers shot 9-for-10 on free throws in the first quarter and 11-for-13 in the first half, keeping the margin manageable despite shooting 10-for-36 from the field through two quarters.
Parkside pushed the advantage to 11 in the second quarter and took a 44-33 lead into halftime after Hamill repeatedly sparked transition chances. Hamill finished with a team-high 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting, added eight rebounds, and recorded a career-high five steals. The Rangers also got key first-half contributions from Nelson, who totaled 12 points and six assists, and Arni, who scored 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting in 16 minutes.
The game flipped in the third quarter.
Parkside managed just seven points in the period and went 2-for-22 from the field (9 percent) after halftime, while Roosevelt slowly chipped away and tied the game at 44-44 on a layup from Isabel Lindo with 6:09 left in the third. The Lakers then took their first lead of the game moments later at the free-throw line and carried a 48-51 deficit into the fourth after closing the quarter with the edge. That third-quarter drought - combined with turnovers - proved costly for the Rangers, who finished with 17 giveaways.
Roosevelt capitalized, scoring 23 points off turnovers compared to Parkside's 17, and the Lakers' offense finally found rhythm late. After shooting 10-for-50 over the first three quarters, Roosevelt went 8-for-14 in the fourth (57 percent) and hit 3-for-7 from beyond the arc in the final period.
The closing minutes turned into a possession-by-possession battle.
The teams traded leads multiple times in the fourth, with Roosevelt briefly going in front 60-59 on a Kelly Boyle 3 with 4:37 to play before Hamill answered at the free-throw line. Parkside regained the lead behind timely finishes from Nelson and Arni, then went up 68-66 when Nelson hit a jumper with nine seconds remaining.
That set the stage for Outlay.
After Parkside's late score, Roosevelt advanced the ball and Outlay rose at the horn, burying the game-winning three to seal the 69-68 final.
Lillie Petersen posted her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while four Rangers scored in double figures: Hamill (18), Nelson (12), Arni (12) and Petersen (10). Lexi Bugajski added nine points, five rebounds and three blocks, and Parkside won the rebounding battle 43-39, including an 18-13 edge on offensive boards.
Roosevelt was led by Isabella Pitta's 20 points and 15 rebounds, plus seven made free throws. Brynne Katcher added 14 points, Boyle scored 12, and Outlay finished with nine points, the last three of them the biggest. The Lakers also shot 17-for-19 at the free-throw line (89 percent), a steady advantage in a one-point game.
The Rangers will regroup before hitting the road to take on Ferris State on Monday, January 5, at 4:30 p.m. CT. To keep up with all things Rangers, be sure to visit parksiderangers.com/coverage.
