KENOSHA, Wis. –
Jaelyn Derlein delivered the best performance of her collegiate career as Parkside stayed hot at home with a 79-66 win over Saginaw Valley State on Saturday inside De Simone Arena.
Derlein poured in a career-high 20 points on an ultra-efficient 7-for-10 shooting night, drilling a career-best six 3-pointers on nine attempts to lead a balanced Ranger attack. It marked the first 20-point game of her career and highlighted another strong offensive showing for Parkside, which improved to .500 with its second straight double-figure win.
The Rangers set the tone immediately, racing out to a 25-point opening quarter while shooting 64% from the field. Parkside knocked down four 3-pointers in the opening 10 minutes and used crisp ball movement to build an early lead, assisting on seven of its nine made field goals in the period.
After the fast start, the offense slowed in the second quarter as both teams locked in defensively. Parkside managed just seven points in the frame and shot under 25%, but the Rangers' defense held Saginaw Valley State to eight points, allowing Parkside to carry a narrow 32-30 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the break, the Rangers found their rhythm again. Parkside opened the third quarter with a quick run fueled by transition baskets and perimeter shooting, stretching the lead to double figures. The Rangers scored 23 points in the quarter while shooting 44% from the floor and knocking down four more 3-pointers to take a 55-45 advantage into the final period.
Parkside closed the door with its most efficient quarter of the game, shooting 58% in the fourth and going a perfect 3-for-3 from beyond the arc. The Rangers outscored SVSU 24-21 in the final 10 minutes, repeatedly breaking down the Cardinal defense with drive-and-kick action and extra passes that led to open looks.
Overall, Parkside shot 47% from the field and 42% from three-point range, while registering 24 assists on 27 made baskets. It marked the third consecutive game in which the Rangers recorded at least 24 assists, continuing a season-long trend of unselfish offense. Parkside also won the points-off-turnovers battle 18-9 and received 27 points from its bench.
Derlein's 20 points paced five Rangers in double figures.
Lillie Petersen added 16 points and eight rebounds, while
Katie Hamill contributed 15 points and a team-high nine boards (a new season-high).
Cassidy Arni orchestrated the offense with 11 points and a game-high and career-high 11 assists, and
Lexi Bugajski chipped in 10 points to round out the balanced scoring effort.
Saginaw Valley State was led by Lauren Borsenik with 15 points, while Kaitlyn Geurink put up 14 and Megan McCalla added 12. The Cardinals struggled to keep pace late as Parkside's shooting efficiency and ball movement created separation in the second half.
The Rangers will now hit the road for a brief two-game GLIAC swing, beginning Thursday, Jan. 15, with a matchup at Wayne State in Detroit at 4:30 p.m. CT.
