Rangers Fall to UIS in Doubleheader Action

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. – The Parkside softball team returned to action on Tuesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Rangers took on the University of Illinois Springfield in their final non-conference match up before GLIAC play. They would fall in both games, moving now to 9-9 on the season.

Game One
Parkside struggled to generate offense in game one, falling 6-0 to UIS. The Prairie Stars capitalized on key offensive moments and defensive miscues to secure the shutout victory.

UIS struck first in the bottom of the first inning, manufacturing a run after an error in left field allowed a baserunner to advance to third and score on a sacrifice fly.

Parkside's offense was stifled early, with UIS pitcher holding the Rangers hitless through the first three innings. Parkside's first baserunner came in the fourth when Mia Johnson singled to left field, but the Rangers were unable to advance the runner, leaving one stranded.

UIS extended its lead in the fourth inning, scoring two runs. Their offensive production on top on Rangers miscues pushed the lead to 3-0.

The Prairie Stars put the game out of reach in the sixth inning, tacking on three more runs, widening the gap to 6-0.

Parkside attempted to rally in the seventh with a two-out single from CICI Di Silvio, but UIS closed the game with a routine flyout to center field.

Johnson led the Rangers with the team's only two hits of the contest. UIS, meanwhile, tallied 10 hits while taking advantage of two Parkside errors.

Game Two
The Prairie Stars edged out the Rangers in a thrilling 6-5 contest that came down to the final inning.

Parkside threatened early in the top of the first with a leadoff double from Mia Johnson, but the UIS defense forced Parkside to strand three runners on base. UIS responded in the bottom of the inning, plating two runs to go ahead 2-0.

Parkside cut the lead in the second when Eden Welling launched a solo home run to center field, making it 2-1. UIS extended their lead in the fourth inning, capitalizing on an error and a single to score two more runs, bringing the score to 4-1.

Both teams exchanged opportunities in the middle innings, but neither was able to capitalize significantly. Parkside left runners stranded in multiple frames, while UIS also saw chances slip away with runners in scoring position.

Trailing 4-1, Parkside mounted a furious comeback in the top of the seventh. Reese Valha reached on an error, allowing a run to score. Taylor Utrata followed with an RBI single, and Johnson's two-run single pushed Parkside ahead 5-4.

UIS responded in the bottom of the inning as a single would drive in the game tying run pushing the score to 5-5.

Parkside was unable to regain the lead, as UIS shut them down in the final two innings. In the bottom of the ninth, UIS secured the victory on a walk out single. The Prairie Stars would edge out the Rangers 6-5.
