KENOSHA, Wis. –
Jalen Spuhler was named the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) Wrestler of the Week following a dominant championship performance at the 46th Annual Midwest Classic. Competing at 149 pounds, Spuhler went undefeated and secured the individual title for the second straight year, helping Parkside claim its second consecutive team championship.
A senior from Hartford, Wis., Spuhler won all six of his matches during the tournament, including victories over three nationally ranked opponents on his path to the championship.
Spuhler opened the tournament with a 10–2 major decision over Connor Saylor of Gannon. He followed with a win by fall against Buddy Leonard of Davenport at 3:43 before defeating Avery Buonocore of UNC Pembroke by a 16–3 major decision to advance to the quarterfinals.
On day two, Spuhler edged No. 10 Rudy Lopez of Northern State by a 4–2 decision in the quarterfinals, using a late third-period takedown to secure the victory. He then earned a 5–4 decision over No. 8 Matthew Sarbo of Pitt-Johnstown in the semifinals. In the championship bout, Spuhler capped off the weekend with his fastest match of the tournament, winning by fall over No. 6 Hayden Kuhn of Ashland at 2:27 to claim the title.
In addition to winning the 149-pound championship, Spuhler was named the NSIC Wrestler of the Week following his dominant showing.
The Rangers will return to dual competition on December 20, hosting Minnesota State Moorhead at De Simone Arena with action set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
