Rangers Notch Late Goal to Secure Season Opening Win

KENOSHA, WIs. -- The Parkside men's soccer program officially kicked of the 2024 season this afternoon at Wood Road Field. The Rangers played host to the Quincy Hawks as a 77th minute goal lifted them to a 1-0 season opening victory.

"I think it was great for us to battle through a hot day. I thought the match was pretty evenly fought throughout. Both us and Quincy had opportunities to finish offensively. What a finish by Lalo, putting it to the far post. It wasn't pretty but we are 1-0. We will enjoy it and get ready for Lewis on Sunday," said head coach Jason Zitzke after the victory.

Inside the Box Score
  • Eduardo Aguilera-Guillen opened the Rangers goal scoring account for 2024. It was his first goal as a Ranger.
  • Daniyal Rana and company started 2024 on the right foot, collecting the first clean sheet of the season. Last season, it took until the sixth game for the Rangers to secure the first clean sheet of 2023.

How it Happened
The first 45 minutes featured plenty of physical soccer. The Rangers would pick up two yellow cards in the opening half of play. Both teams would battle back and forth, each putting up six shots in the half. The game would sit 0-0 at the halftime whistle.

Quincy would make the Rangers uncomfortable in the second half, launching 11 total shots in the second half. The Rangers took full advantage of their opportunity as Quincy would outshoot the Rangers 17-11.

The breakthrough came for the Rangers in the 77th minute. Great interlinking play between Sam Carles and Valentin Sandoval would connect with Eduardo Aguilera-Guillen. Aguilera-Guillen would slot the ball at the low and at the far post and hit side netting to give the Rangers the 1-0 lead. The Rangers would hold solid defensively to see the scoreline through the final 13 minutes to secure the victory.
