Chicago, IL - In the 2024 GLIAC opener, the Parkside Rangers lost both of their battles to the Grand Valley State Lakers. In game one, Parkside took an early lead but was unable to hang on and lost 7-2. Grand Valley State dominated in game two, winning 12-1.
GAME ONE
After taking a one-run lead in the first inning, Parkside rode an impressive pitching performance from Carter Storti and held onto the lead through the first three innings. Grand Valley State rallied to take the lead late, and it was enough to take Parkside down.
In the first inning, Storti picked up a strike out and a crucial double play. With runners on the corners and one out, Storti forced GVSU into a 6-4-3 double play. In the bottom half of the inning, John St. Clair scored Andrew Harris on a sacrifice-fly.
Carter Storti was as solid as it gets in his second collegiate start. Storti lasted four innings, allowed just three hits, and struck out four hitters. In the second inning, Storti was involved in a 'struck-him-out, throw-him-out' double play to end the inning. He was charged with just one earned-run that came in the fourth inning, but received the loss in the game.
GVSU scored two runs in the fourth inning, and four runs in the fifth inning and took control of the game. Parkside got a run back as Joe Hoeks drove home Angel Rades on an RBI double. Parkside ended up losing the game 7-2.
GAME TWO
Despite another solid effort off the mound for Parkside, they were unable to provide enough support both in the field and offensively to get a victory. GVSU exploded for 12 runs in the ballgame and completed a two-game sweep over Parkside in the GLIAC opener.
Freshman Donovan Dykas got the nod in game two and was once again solid. Although GVSU plated five-runs in the second inning, only one run was earned against Dykas. In the inning, Parkside committed two errors that extended the inning. He pitched 5.2 innings with 111 pitches and struck out three hitters in the game.
Already down five-runs, Parkside got their only run of the game in the third inning. Andrew Harris drove home Peter Fusek on a sacrifice-fly.
GVSU blew the game open in the sixth inning with a seven-run frame. Parkside saw Benje Hencke and Luis Gonzalez provide three scoreless innings of relief to end the game. Hencke picked up a strikeout and did not allow a hit, and Gonzalez struck out two hitters in his single inning.
