GAME 1: Saginaw Valley State 10, Parkside 1
GAME 2: Saginaw Valley State 7, Parkside 0
The Parkside softball team came into Saturday's games against a hot, Saginaw Valley State team after splitting with Wayne State in the first doubleheader of the weekend. The Cardinals' offense was on display in both games as they continued their winning streak with a sweep over the Rangers.
GAME 1 RECAP
The Cardinals extended their win streak to seven games as they came out on fire in Game one. Starting in the bottom of the second, three hits and an error led to four runs (three earned) coming across the plate. They continued their dominance as a home run in the third from Meagan VerVaecke drove in another two runs to put the Cardinals up big early.
The Rangers struggled mightily through the first three innings, but made a turn in the top of the fourth, scoring a run on two hits from Jadynn Powell and Rylee Baetz. This would be the only run scored by the Rangers.
Saginaw Valley did not look back as they added four more runs in the fourth, all of which were unearned. They closed the game in five only allowing two hits. The Rangers allowed 11 hits to go along with 2 errors.
Junior Jadynn Powell and freshman Rylee Baetz remained productive for the Rangers as both accounted for the only two hits for the team. Baetz, went 1-for-1 with an RBI single and reached base on a walk. Powell went 1-for-2 with a double and run scored.
Kiley Akey and Olivia Masnica were back on the mound for the Rangers in this one. Akey went a full 3.0 innings allowing five earned on seven hits. Masnica pitched one inning allowing four unearned on four hits.
GAME 2 RECAP
Game two was all Saginaw Valley as they asserted themselves heavily in the first three innings. Although the result was the same from Game one, the Rangers woke up the bats, recording eight hits in this one.
Junior Taylor Delgado got things started off as she singled to third, followed by a single from Jadynn Powell. A walk for Alyssa Laxson loaded the bases early with one out, but a pop up from Rylee Baetz ended the inning as Delgado was thrown out trying to tag-up. Saginaw quickly responded with a double and an RBI single.
Similar to the first game, the second inning was where the Cardinals took control. After a walk, an RBI single added another run to their total. Then, a double scored another, which was followed by another RBI single. Another RBI single with one out produced another run for the Cardinals as they took a commanding 4-0 lead.
The top of the third was more of the same for the Rangers, as Delgado and Powell both reached base with singles this time around. Saginaw responded with two runs of their own courtesy of a single from Sarah Gersch.
The rest of the game featured excellent defense and pitching from both sides as there were only five total hits in the remaining innings. Saginaw extended their win streak to eight games. They are now 12-4 in the month of April.
Powell stay consistent for the Rangers with two hits in this game. Delgado and freshman Caroleann Goglin joined the hit category adding two hits of their own, going 2-for-4 and 2-for-3, respectively. Redshirt-senior Alyssa Laxson produced a single as well with a walk on the day. Junior Dani Evans also had a hit in the loss. Redshirt-senior Tijanne Ross will suffer the loss as she allowed seven hits with five earned through 1.1 innings pitched. Olivia Masnica pitched the rest of the way allowing five hits with two earned while striking out three.
