Rangers Earn Road Win at Wayne State

Parkside 87, Wayne State 79
The Parkside women's basketball team traveled to Detroit, Mich. to take on the Wayne State Warriors on Sunday. The Rangers were hot offensively from the word go. They were led by Alyssa Nelson, who hit three three-point shots to tie Parkside hall of famer Jadee Rooney's all-time three-point scoring record of 248 three-point field goals.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Ranger got the long ball working early, with Kayla Bohr, Sheridan Flauger, and Paty Gallasova all hitting their first three-point attempts to start the game. Another three from Kendal Zeiter put the Rangers up 12-10 early in the first quarter. Another bucket from Gallasova, along with three-pointers from Nelson and Flauger built the Rangers lead to seven as they ended the quarter up 20-13.

The Rangers kept the momentum to start the second quarter, going on a 10-4 run to increase their lead. The Warriors woke up late in the quarter, getting back within five points of the Rangers. The game went into halftime with the Rangers ahead 40-34. Flauger led the Rangers with ten points in the half, shooting 4-5 from the field.

The Rangers kept up the scoring in the third quarter, going on a 7-0 run to increase their lead to 49-38. Wayne State rallied back late in the quarter, bringing the score to 58-54 with a minute left in the quarter. A free throw from Nelson brought the lead back to five.

The Rangers looked to hold on to their lead as they entered the fourth quarter. The Warriors found themselves in serious foul trouble late in the game, with five players tallying four fouls. Howevver, the Rangers found themselves in foul trouble late as well, losing Maja Leidefors with four minutes to go, as well as seeing Bohr and Grace Lomen have four fouls.

The Warriors lost Kate McArthur with 3:12 to play, sending Flauger to the line to sink a free throw. Bohr fouled out with 2:45 to play. After a pair of free throws from Wayne State's Shea Tripp, the Rangers led 79-72. Rebecca Fugate, the Warriors' leading scorer with 25 points, fouled out with 2:37 to play as she fouled Nelson in full court press. Tripp fouled out moments later, being the third Warrior to head to the bench. The Rangers would hold their lead through the rest of the game and come away with the road win

A LOOK AT THE STATS

HEAR FROM COACH CONELY
"Big win on the road! We were dialed in from three in the first half – thought we did a good job of attacking the basket in the second. It was great to see a balanced offense, though I would like to see us be more consistent defensively. Congrats to Alyssa on tying Jadee's three-point record – Jadee was an absolute sniper – definitely great company to be in! Overall, our group battled and bounced back this weekend. It's great to go 2-0 on the road against tough opponents."
