Men's Soccer Wins Season Opener Against Quincy

Parkside 3, Quincy 2
The Rangers opened their 2021 season with a match against the Quincy Hawks on Thursday afternoon on the road.  After the Hawks found the back of the net and scored early, the Rangers went on a 3-0 run to end the first half, a run that would prove to be enough to seal their first win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
It took just over eight minutes for the Hawks to get on the scoreboard, jumping out to an early lead.  In the 17th minute, senior Max Ludwig, a First Team All-GLIAC honoree last season, started the scoring rally for the Rangers with a free kick goal.  In the 26th minute, redshirt-junior Rade Novakovich, also a First Team All-GLIAC honoree, scored his first goal of the year, with the assist coming off a pretty pass from redshirt-freshman Matteo Quintero.  Redshirt-freshman Bryan Torres came into the game late in the first half and immediately made his presence known, scoring a goal in the 35th minute.  The Hawks tallied on one more goal in the 60th minute, but the Rangers strong defense held on to the end to secure the win.

HEAR FROM COACH ZITZKE
"(Quincy) came out and pressured us and had us pinned in for the first 10 minutes and got the first goal.  We responded well and immediately went forward.  We looked our best during the first half.  A beautiful free kick from Ludo at the top of the box, followed by Rade Novakovich having a nice turn and strike to put us up 2-1.  Bryan Torres came in off the bench and beat his man into the box for the third (goal).  In the second half, we had bits and pieces in the first 15 minutes that was culminated by a great chance that went off the post.  We defended well for most of the final 25 (minutes).  (Quincy) really came at us.  Today wasn't pretty, but we were able to hang on.  The guys in the back played a lot of minutes and gave us all they had.  In the end, it's a good regional win on the road."

WHAT'S NEXT FOR THE RANGERS
Parkside will continue its road trip as the Rangers will make a stop in Romeoville, Ill., and play a match against the Lewis Flyers on Sunday, Sept. 5 at 2:30 p.m.  The Rangers home debut will be in one week as they host Illinois Springfield on Sept. 9 at Wood Road Field.
