Parkside baseball didn't finish out the opening weekend in the way they had planned, as UIndy won both games on Saturday after also taking the opener on Friday. The Greyhounds won Saturday's first game 6-4 and took the second 10-0.
Â
GAME 1: UIndy 6, Parkside 4
Parkside had a lead after a two-run fifth inning, but UIndy scored all six runs in a three-inning span to pull away. The Rangers added two runs late, but couldn't get two more they needed to send the game to extras.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Greyhounds struck first, with a run in the bottom of the fourth inning and the Rangers responded, plating two in the top of the fifth to take a 2-1 lead.
Bryce Inman drove in
Noah Tyrrell on a sacrifice fly followed by a double-steal, which saw
Michael Pillizzi steal home.
Â
UIndy took the lead right back however, scoring four runs in the bottom of the fifth and adding another in the sixth. Parkside came back to score one in the seventh off a
Niko Diaz sacrifice fly and made it 6-4 in the top of the eighth thanks to a Tyrrell RBI single that scored
Casey Oliver.
Â
WHO LED THE WAY
Tyrrell had a good game, going 3-for-4 with two runs and an RBI while
Casey Oliver went 2-for-4 with a double and a run.
Nicholas Rana started for the Rangers and threw 3.0 no-hit innings to start, but suffered the loss, with his final line reading 4.2 innings, six hits, five runs and six strikeouts.
Â
GAME 2: UIndy 10, Parkside 0
It was all UIndy from start to finish, as the Greyhounds scored eight of their 10 runs in the first three innings and held Parkside to just two hits.
Shawn Rigsby and
Dominic Esposito each had a hit for the Rangers.
Connor Cunningham suffered the loss while
Matt Helwig,
Kyle Portner and
Jarrett Rossiano all pitched a scoreless inning. Helwig struck out the side during his inning.
Â
WHAT'S NEXT
The Rangers will stay on the road next weekend, heading to Rolla, Mo., for a four-game series against Missouri S&T on Saturday, Feb. 23 and Sunday, Feb. 24.
