Bench Helps Rangers Earn Road Win over Wayne State

PARKSIDE 68, WAYNE STATE 62

Bench contributions helped the Rangers secure their tenth win of the season, this one coming on the road at Wayne State Thursday night. The win also moved Parkside to .500 on the season in GLIAC play.

HEAR FROM COACH CONELY

"I'm proud of how we gutted out a road win against a tough Wayne State team. Our bench was huge, it was great to see them step up and raise the level of our team's play on both ends of the floor," first year head coach Jen Conely said. "That 24-point swing in the second quarter, all from our bench, was awesome to see."

"Shelby (Cheston) led the way and was an absolute force inside," Conely added. "It's great to see her continue to play well, especially in front of her home crowd."

FIRST HALF

The Rangers jumped out in front early, with a layup from junior Carolina Rahkonen. Wayne State responded with an 8-3 run when Cheston snapped a three-minute scoreless stretch for the Rangers. Cheston scored eight straight points to keep Parkside in the game, as they trailed 18-13 at the end of the first quarter. The Warriors started the second quarter with a 7-0 run, stretching their lead to 12. A three-pointer from sophomore Aina Cabrero Sinol ended the Warrior run and turned the game around for the Rangers. Parkside finished the half on a 23-6 run, giving them a 36-31 lead at the break.

SECOND HALF

The two teams exchanged baskets to start the half until Parkside rattled off an 11-4 run, which was capped by a three from senior Blair Arthur. Arthur's shot gave the Rangers a 12-point lead, their largest of the night. However, that lead would soon evaporate as the Warriors again responded with an 11-0 run, narrowing the Parkside lead to 51-50 with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. The Rangers had an answer as back-to-back baskets from Cheston started a 9-0 run to put the game away.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Rangers will head to Ashland, Ohio to take on the No. 11 ranked Ashland Eagles on Feb. 16 at Noon. Parkside returns home on Feb. 21 to take on Lake Superior State at 5:30 p.m. which is also Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night, Academic Achievement Night and Retro Night. Saturday the team welcomes in Ferris State for senior day and White Out.
