Parkside 2, Northern Michigan 2
HEAR FROM COACH NIKOLIC
"I'm proud of the fight put forth by these Rangers and how some younger players have stepped up when needed," head coach
Brittany Nikolic said. "I thought we were going to get that third goal, but nevertheless, we are excited to start GLIAC play next week and show what kind of team we have here."
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a tough loss on Friday, the Rangers came out right away, scoring in the 8th minute of play. The goal emerged from a combination play: redshirt-senior
Jenna Rivera passed to freshman
Myah Strokosch who then crossed the ball into a crowded box, finding senior
Chloe Couves who put it away. Parkside ended Northern Michigan's two-game win streak as well as their shut-out streak. The Wildcat's have scored 12 goals in their past two matches, but today the Ranger defense held them to only two. The first half ended with both teams tied at one goal apiece.
An injury in the second half stopped the run-of-play for both teams; however, the Rangers were able to capitalize off a free-kick awarded right outside the Wildcat's 18-yard box. Couves curled in the ball with her left foot, perfectly setting up junior
Maycee Kroening to head the ball in the back of the net. Parkside kept the lead only for 90 seconds until NMU scored off a corner kick with seven minutes left in full time.
OT
In both overtime periods, each team had opportunities but nothing amounted to a goal. Both teams tied for seventh in the GLIAC preseason poll and will meet again on Oct. 12 at Northern Michigan, which will count towards conference play.
STATWORTHY
The Wildcat offense reached double-digits in corner kicks during the match, totaling 10 altogether. The foul count also reached double-digits as NMU tallied 18 fouls and two yellow cards and the Rangers had 11 fouls. Parkside had 19 total shots with eight on goal and the Wildcats had 26 shots with 11 on goal. Â
