Late Rally Helps McKendree Take Both from Parkside

SOMERS, Wis. – Parkside softball was one pitch away from splitting with McKendree on Saturday afternoon, but the visiting Bearcats used a three-run home in the top of the seventh to take both games from Parkside on Saturday. The Bearcats, who improved to 22-7 overall and 8-2 overall, won game one 4-2 before winning game two 5-4.

The Rangers, who were coming off back-to-back conference sweeps, move to 14-14 overall and 5-5 in the GLVC. The team has already surpassed the win total in five of the last six seasons.

In game one, McKendree sent their stud freshman Miranda Gajewski to the mound and she improved to 13-1 on the season. Allison Hausl pitched a good game for the Rangers, going all 7.0 innings allowing three earned runs with two strikeouts after not allowing a hit through the first three innings.

Parkside led early, scoring a run in the bottom of the second inning off a Hausl RBI single to plate Adrien Hall. McKendree came back in the top of the fourth where they finally got to Hausl, scoring three runs to take a 3-1 lead. They added another in the top of the fifth inning to make it 4-1 at the time. For the Rangers in the fifth, Kellie Fenza drew a two-out walk and came in to score on Megan Aliverti's RBI double to center field, making it 4-2.

In game two, Parkside led 4-2 heading into the seventh inning. The Bearcats opened the inning with a double and a walk, followed by a huge double-play ball as Fenza rifled out the runner on second base after a lineout. After another single, McKendree brought in a pinch hitter who brought it to a full count with two outs before hitting the go-ahead three-run home run to center field.

The Rangers led early once again, scoring a run in the top of the first inning and a pair of runs in the second inning. Danielle Crockett brought in Fenza in the first to make it 1-0 in the first inning. In the second inning, Jessica Shields singled and Morgan Moore came around to score on an error, making it 2-1 Rangers before Fenza singled up the middle to score Shields. Parkside also added a run in the sixth inning off a Hausl RBI double that scored Madison Manders.

The Green & White, who tallied 12 hits in game two, saw four players finish with multiple hits as Shields and Fenza went 3-for-4 and 2-for-3 in the top two spots in the lineup, respectively. Crockett finished 2-for-3 and Samantha Newtoff went 2-for-3 with a double.

Alyssa Hrncar suffered the loss in game two, going all 7.0 innings allowing five runs on eight hits. It was her 13th complete game of the season.

Parkside will hit the road next weekend, facing Indianapolis on Saturday and Bellarmine on Sunday.
