Women's Basketball Hangs Tough at Milwaukee

Murphy Led with 13 Points

Ranger Women's Basketball hung with Division I Milwaukee Panthers in an exhibition game Thursday night at Klotsche Arena under first-year head coach Jen Conely. All 13 Rangers who played in the game scored.

"It's nice to pick on other people besides us," Conely joked. "It's nice to finally see other competition."

"We have stuff we need to clean up, but it was about time to get out on the court," Conely said.

FIRST HALF

Milwaukee ended the first quarter with a 9-0 run until senior Asiah Lawson's layup as time expired ended the run, but the Panthers took a 22-14 lead in at the end of that quarter. In the second quarter, the Rangers scored eight of their 14 points off of free throws, but the Panthers outscored the Green & White 19-14 and led 41-28 at the half.

SECOND HALF

In the beginning of the third quarter, the Panthers went on a 10-0 run to open up a 20-point lead. Parkside was able to finish more 3-point opportunities in the third, with made threes coming from Lawson, junior Carolina Rahkonen, graduate student Ali Bettencourt, sophomore Alisha Murphy and freshman Maddy Harrison. The Rangers outscored the Panthers in the fourth quarter 20-15 as Parkside hit a pair of 3-pointers and went 8-for-14 from the free throw line.

STAT LEADERS

Murphy led Parkside with 13 points, along with making 2-for-2 from beyond the ark. Bettencourt, Rahkonen, Nelson and Lawson finished with seven points each. Harrison led the team with five rebounds, while Taylor Stephen had a team-high four assists. As a team, the Rangers shot 39.3-percent, while the Panthers finished the game at 42.0. Turnovers went even at 13-13.

WHAT'S NEXT

Parkside will return to DeSimone Gymnasium this Saturday, Nov. 3 to take on Benedictine in another exhibition match-up at 6 p.m. The Rangers will open conference play against Grand Valley State on Thursday, Nov. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at home.
