Ranger Men's Soccer Falls, Looking Forward to Sunday's Championship Match

Parkside Still has the Opportunity to Win Conference Against Saginaw Valley State

Ashland 2, Parkside 0

The Rangers fell short of a victory today after Ashland came out with an early score in the 12th minute. The Eagles put in another goal in the 48th minute to seal the deal. Parkside will host Saginaw Valley State on Sunday, Oct. 21, in hopes of winning its first conference championship in the GLIAC.

HEAR FROM COACH ZITZKE

"It's a disappointing loss but we need to move onto Sunday," head coach Jason Zitzke said. "If you think about some of the ups and downs of the program, despite the result today, Sunday we'll play at home for the opportunity to win our first regular season conference championship and host our first conference tournament."

"We'd be hosting the conference tournament for first time in conference history," Zitzke added. "In the grand scheme of things, that makes for an exciting weekend, especially with this being Hall of Fame weekend as well, so we have a lot to look forward to."

HOW IT HAPPENED

In the 12th minute, the Eagles found an opening in the defense and were able to slot a ball in, putting Ashland up 1-0. The Rangers held off the Eagles until early into the second half when a bad pass in the midfield resulted in a goal, making the score 2-0 which it would remain until the final whistle.

STATWORTHY

Senior Brandon Henderson and redshirt-senior Vic Vera led the Rangers with three shots a piece, both with two on goal. They were followed by redshirt-senior Evan Garcia and redshirt-juniors Leki Prpa and Jack Krenzien with two shots with one on frame. Junior goalkeeper Juan Gonzalez had three saves on the match.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Rangers have a chance to clinch a conference championship for the first time in the GLIAC this Sunday, Oct. 21. Parkside will face Saginaw Valley State at Wood Road Field at noon for Senior Day.
