Rangers Record Split with Bellarmine on Senior Day

SOMERS, Wis. -- Senior Mario Samuel and two relievers combined to shut out Bellarmine 1-0 in game one, but a furious late inning rally by Wisconsin-Parkside  in game two fell short as the Knights topped the Rangers 11-10 to split a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday at Oberbrunner Field on Senior Day.

Samuel, who was making his final appearance in a Ranger uniform, went 5.1 innings in game one and allowed just four hits while striking out nine batters. Cody Rolshoven, a fellow senior, pitched 0.2 innings on scoreless relief and Keaton Kastberg worked a scoreless seventh inning to notch the save.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which finished the season with an 18-22 overall record and a 12-14 record in the GLVC, scored the only run of game one in the bottom of the third inning.

Senior Zach Thompson hit a double to left to begin the inning and trotted home with the only run of the game when senior Jake Kolasinski doubled to left centerfield giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead.

Bellarmine, which wrapped up the regular season with a 33-17 overall record and a 20-8 record in conference play, threatened to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning but Andrew Luscomb came up with a big defensive play to keep the Knights off the scoreboard.

With one out and a runner on second base, Christopher Allen singled through the left side but Luscomb threw out Bobby Brokamp at the plate to preserve the 1-0 lead. After walking Griffin Neuer, Kastberg got Josh Finerty to groundout to end the game.

Thompson had a pair of doubles to lead the Rangers offense in game one, while Kyle Schulz, Kolasinski, Troy Bittenbender, Nick Janssen, Trent Muscat and Luscomb all recorded base hits.

Game two was a wild affair, which ended with the Rangers having the tying run at the plate in the bottom of the 10th inning.

Bellarmine raced out to a seemingly safe 8-1 lead, but Wisconsin-Parkside would produce a late-inning comeback that would eventually force extra innings.

Wisconsin-Parkside got back into the game by scoring six times in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Janssen, Domenic Hammudeh and Muscat hit back-to-back-to-back singles to load the bases with no outs to begin the eighth inning. Schulz followed with a single up the middle to score Janssen and Hammudeh to trim the lead to 8-3.

Following a pitching change, Thompson lined out to first for the first out of the inning but Kyohei Makita doubled to right to score Muscat bringing the Rangers to within 8-4. The rally continued as Kolasinski doubled to right to plate both Schulz and Makita cutting the lead to 8-6.

Bittenbender hit the Rangers third straight double to put runners on second and third with two outs and Max Widmar hit a single to right to score Kolasinski but Bittenbender was thrown out at the plate to end the inning with the Rangers trailing 8-7.

Bellarmine tacked on an insurance run in the top of the ninth inning, but the Rangers would once again mount a rally.

Muscat reached on a throwing error with one out to begin the comeback and with two outs Thompson doubled to left to put runners on second and third. Makita roped a double to left centerfield that brought home both Muscat and Thompson to tie the game at 9-9 and force extra innings.

Bellarmine took advantage of two Wisconsin-Parkside errors and two walks to score two runs in the top of the 10th inning to take an 11-9 lead.

The Rangers would once again rally, but came up just short in the final inning. Luscomb singled up the middle to begin the inning, but was cut down at the plate when Janssen followed with a double down the leftfield line. Janssen, who advanced to third on the throw to the plate, would later score on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 11-10 but Ryan Henson notched a strikeout to end the game.

Schulz went 3-for-5 with three runs drive in, while Makita was 2-for-5 with three RBIs in game two. Janssen and Muscat each had a pair of hits, while Thompson, Kolasinski, Bittenbender, Widmar, Luscomb and Hammudeh each recorded base hits in game two.

With the game two loss, Wisconsin-Parkside was eliminated from the race for the GLVC Tournament. The Rangers had an outstanding season as they won the most games by a Wisconsin-Parkside team in six years and played until the final game of the regular season with postseason hopes on the line.

Saturday also marked Senior Day for the Rangers as Zach Thompson, Nick Janssen, Cody Rolshoven, Trent Muscat, Joseph Plaud, Mario Samuel, Jake Kolasinski, James Reinowski and Kyohei Makita all played their final games in a Wisconsin-Parkside uniform.
