Rangers Earn Split on Senior Day

SOMERS, Wis. -- Freshman Jessica Shields broke a 1-1 deadlock with a two-run double in the bottom of the fifth inning leading Wisconsin-Parkside to a 3-2 victory over Missouri S&T in game two and the Rangers earned a split of the Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday on Senior Day.

With two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Sara Markelonis was hit by a pitch to begin the rally and freshman Allison Hausl ripped a double to left to put runners on second and third. Shields then coaxed a ball through the left side of the infield, which plated Markelonis and Hausl with what proved to be the winning runs.

The Miners trimmed the lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the sixth inning, but senior Carly Dundee closed out her brilliant career by retiring the side in order in the top of the seventh inning to secure the victory for the Rangers.

Dundee, who relieved Hausl, pitched the final 2.0 innings and allowed just one hit and struck out one to earn her third save of the season. Hausl gained the victory for the Rangers as she worked 3.0 innings and allowed just one run while striking out two.

Missouri S&T took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning of game two, but Cassie Walek tied the game in the bottom of the second inning when she lofted a solo homer to left centerfield.

Shields finished the game 1-for-3, while Dundee, Walek and Hausl also had hits for the Rangers in game two.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which concluded the regular season with a 19-29 overall record and a 13-15 mark in the GLVC, recorded the most wins for the Rangers since the 2010 team won 30 games. Under the direction of first-year head coach Kristin Ortman, Wisconsin-Parkside also notched the most conference wins since that same 2010 team won 16 games and the Rangers also posted victories over nationally-ranked Grand Valley State and Indianapolis during the season.

Missouri S&T, which finished the regular season with a 22-31 overall record and a 14-16 mark in conference play, won the opening game of the doubleheader 4-3 when Olivia Young hit a solo homer in the top of the seventh inning.

Wisconsin-Parkside took an early lead in game one when Shields, who led off the game with a single, scampered home from third on a wild pitch giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead.

The Miners rallied to take a 2-1 lead in the top of the third inning when Ashley Rausch homered and Young hit an RBI double.

Wisconsin-Parkside answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead.

Shields hit a one-out single to begin the Rangers rally and stole her team-leading 20th base of the year. Kellie Fenza followed with a base hit to left and the Rangers loaded the bases when Rachel Seefeldt drew a walk. Adrien Hall tied the game for Wisconsin-Parkside when she reached on an infield single to score Shields.

The Rangers took a 3-2 lead when Madison Manders drew a bases loaded walk, which plated Fenza to put Wisconsin-Parkside back in front.

The Miners tied the game with a run in the top of the fifth inning and Young added her go-ahead homer in the top of the seventh inning.

The Rangers put the tying run on first when Shields reached on an infield single, but a groundout ended the game for the Miners.

Shields had three hits and scored a pair of runs for the Rangers in the opener, while Fenza and Hall had base hits for Wisconsin-Parkside.

Following the conclusion of the doubleheader, seniors Dundee, Seefeldt, Markelonis, Raegan Fingerman and Caressa DeRossett were all honored for their contributions to the Ranger program.

The Rangers slim postseason hopes will be decided on Sunday when the GLVC regular season comes to an end.
