KANSAS CITY -- Sophomore
Cassie Walek scored from third base on a Rockhurst throwing error in the sixth inning lifting Wisconsin-Parkside to a 4-3 victory over the Hawks giving the Rangers a split of the Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Monday at Loyola Park.
With two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Walek reached on a fielder's choice.
Adrien Hall was safe on a Rockhurst throwing error, which allowed Walek to advance to third and on the play the Hawks first baseman Hannah Pyle threw the ball past Hanna Stam at third base which permitted Walek to scamper home with what proved to be the winning run.
Wisconsin-Parkside starter
Carly Dundee allowed a leadoff single to Kelsey Tepen to start the bottom of the seventh inning, but Dundee got a line out and a ground out to end the game after the Hawks had sacrificed Tepen to second base. Dundee allowed seven hits in 7.0 innings and three runs while striking out two batters to notch her 11th win of the season.
The Rangers, who improved to 16-28 overall and 10-14 in the GLVC, let an early lead slip away but rallied to top Rockhurst in game two.
Rachel Seefeldt roped a double to center to begin the top of the second inning and came around to score when
Madison Manders doubled down the leftfield line giving the Rangers a 1-0 lead.
Rockhurst responded with three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 3-1 lead, but the Rangers rallied to tie the score in the fourth inning.
Seefeldt led off the fourth inning with a single, but was forced out at second on a
Morgan Sikon groundball. Manders hit her second double of the game, which advanced Sikon to third base with one out.
Walek cut the lead to 3-2 with a sacrifice fly to right that plated Sikon. The Rangers then tied the score at 3-3 when Hall delivered an RBI single up the middle to score Manders.
Manders was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI to lead the Rangers in game two, while Seefeldt was 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Jessica Shields, Dundee, Sikon and Hall all added base hits for the Rangers.
Rockhurst, which dropped to 30-20 overall and 19-7 in conference play with the game two loss, won the opener 6-3 with a pair of three-run innings.
The Hawks took an early lead by scoring three times in the bottom of the first inning before the Rangers got on the board in the top of the third inning.
Manders launched a two-out homer to left cutting the Hawks lead to 3-1, but Rockhurst added three more runs in the bottom of the third inning to up the lead to 6-1.
Wisconsin-Parkside got a run back in the top of the fourth inning when Walek hit an RBI single to score Dundee to cut the lead to 6-2.
The Rangers tacked on a run in the top of the seventh inning when Manders hit her second homer of the game with two outs to trim the lead to 6-3.
Wisconsin-Parkside got an outstanding relief outing from
Emilee Nelson who worked 3.2 innings and permitted three hits and no runs to keep the Rangers in the game.
Manders was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs and finished the doubleheader 4-for-6 with three runs scored and three RBIs. Dundee also had a pair of hits for the Rangers in the opener, while Shields, Walek and
Megan Aliverti each added base hits.
The Rangers are still alive in pursuit of a berth in the GLVC Tournament and will conclude the regular season with doubleheaders against Missouri S&T and Drury. The Rangers host Missouri S&T on Saturday (April 29) and Drury on Sunday (April 30) at the Case Softball Complex.
