Fenza Hits Walk-Off Single; Rangers Sweep Pumas

RENESSELAER, Ind. -- Sophomore Kellie Fenza hit a two-out, walk-off single in the bottom of the eighth inning that scored Jessica Shields from second base with the winning run giving Wisconsin-Parkside a 3-2 victory over Saint Joseph's and a sweep of the Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Sunday at the Saint Joseph's Softball Field.

With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, Shields started the Rangers game-winning rally with a single to left. After Shields stole second base, Fenza singled up the middle to bring home Shields giving the Rangers the victory.

The two victories raised Wisconsin-Parkside's record to 10-18 overall and 5-5 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. With 20 games still to play in the regular season, the Rangers have already surpassed last season's win total of eight and have recorded the most wins in a season since the 2013 team won 11 games.

The same duo of Shields and Fenza accounted for the Rangers first run of the second game in the bottom of the first inning. Shields reached on an infield single and stole second base, and Fenza followed with a single up the middle giving Wisconsin-Parkside an early 1-0 lead.

Starting pitcher Carly Dundee made the lead stand up until the top of the sixth inning when the Pumas scored two runs to take a 2-1 lead, but Dundee extracted revenge in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie the game.

Shields, who was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two stolen bases in game two, hit a one-out single to start the rally. Fenza laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Shields to second base and Dundee blasted a double to right that brought home Shields with the tying run.

Dundee, who went the distance on the mound to pick up her sixth win of the season, worked out of a jam in the top of the eighth inning. With one out, Briana Wagner reached second base on a Ranger error and Amanda Melzoni followed with a walk. Jordan Schneider grounded out to second base to advance the runners to second and third, but Dundee got Ashley Whitaker to ground out to shortstop to end the threat.

Dundee allowed just four hits in 8.0 innings and struck out four batters to earn the victory, and she also went 1-for-3 at the plate with an RBI.

Senior Rachel Seefeldt went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Rangers to a 6-4 victory in game one of the doubleheader.

Wisconsin-Parkside took an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Shields, who was 2-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases in game one, led off the inning with a single to left. After stealing second base, Shields advanced to third when Fenza laid down a sacrifice bunt.

Dundee coaxed a walk and stole second base and Shields came in to score when the Saint Joseph's catcher dropped the ball on the throw to the plate on the attempted double steal. Seefeldt followed with a double to right that scored Dundee to increase the Rangers lead to 2-0.

Saint Joseph's, which dropped to 10-19 overall and 3-9 in conference play, answered by scoring four runs in the top of the second inning to take a 4-2 lead.

The Rangers would rally to tie the game in the bottom of the second inning by plating two more runs.

Danielle Crockett singled up the middle and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Madison Manders. Shields reached on an infield single, which moved Crockett to third base with one out. After Shields stole second, Fenza delivered an RBI single to right that scored Crockett and trimmed the lead to 4-3.

The Rangers then tied the game at 4-4 when Dundee ripped a single to left to bring home Shields.

Wisconsin-Parkside took the lead for good in the bottom of the third inning when Crockett hit a double down the leftfield line that plated Allison Hausl putting the Rangers in front 5-4.

The Rangers stretched the lead to 6-4 in the bottom of the sixth inning when Seefeldt doubled to left to score Shields.

Dundee, who came on in relief on Hausl, worked out of a jam in the top of the seventh inning to pick up the save. With one out, Whitaker walked and advanced to second on a Ranger error which also allowed Samantha Miller to reach first.

Another Ranger error loaded the bases with one out, but Dundee got a ground ball force out at home and then ended the game by getting Tori Keilman on a groundout.

Hausl worked the first 5.0 innings and permitted five hits and struck out two batters to earn the victory, while Dundee worked the final 2.0 innings to notch the save.

Crockett had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run, while Fenza, Dundee, Hausl and Cassie Walek each had base hits for the Rangers in game one.

Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Tuesday (April 4) when it visits Lewis for a GLVC doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
