Rangers Pound Out 23 Hits; Drop Doubleheader to Lindenwood

ST. CHARLES, Mo. -- Sophomores Cassie Walek and Kellie Fenza each had four hits and Wisconsin-Parkside pounded out 23 hits, but dropped both ends of a doubleheader to Lindenwood on Sunday at the Lou Brock Sports Complex.

Lindenwood won the opening game 14-10 in a slugfest and then won game two 3-0 in a pitcher's duel.

Wisconsin-Parkside, which dropped to 4-12 on the season, had a season-high 19 hits in game one but the Rangers left 12 runners on base and committed four errors.

Fenza, Rilie Berg and Rachel Seefeldt each had three hits in game one, while Jessica Shields, Carly Dundee, Madison Manders and Walek recorded two hits each. Danielle Crockett and Morgan Sikon added a base hit each to the Rangers 19-hit assault.

Wisconsin-Parkside jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning of game one. Shields led off the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on a groundout by Crockett. Fenza was hit by a pitch and one out later, Seefeldt doubled down the leftfield line scoring both Shields and Fenza to give the Rangers an early 2-0 lead.

Lindenwood, which raised its record to 6-6, answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning to tie the score. The Lions then took advantage of two Ranger errors in the bottom of the second inning to score six unearned runs to take an 8-2 lead.

Lindenwood tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning to stretch the lead to 10-2 before the Rangers rallied with six runs in the top of the fourth inning.

Sikon opened the inning by reaching on an error and the Rangers loaded the bases when Manders was hit by a pitch and Shields reached on an infield single.

Fenza reached on an RBI fielder's choice when Shields was tagged out at second, but Sikon scored to cut the lead to 10-3.

Dundee then ripped a three-run homer to right center to bring the Rangers to within 10-6. Seefeldt, Walek and Berg then followed with back-to-back-back doubles to trim the lead to 10-8.

Lindenwood responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to push the lead to 12-8, but the Rangers would once again rally in the top of the fifth inning.

Manders led off the fifth with an infield single and Crockett singled to left to put runners on first and second. Fenza singled to center to bring home Manders to cut the lead to 12-9.

The Lions countered with two more runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase the lead to 14-9.

The Rangers scored a run in the top of the seventh inning when Seefeldt singled to bring home Fenza, but a pair of pop outs ended the game.

After combining for 32 hits in the first game, the pitchers stepped up in the second game.

Lindenwood starter Stormee Galka held the Rangers to four hits and no runs, while Dundee went 6.0 innings and allowed three runs while striking out four batters.

Lindenwood took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning when Lexi Theis hit a two-run triple. The Lions added a run in the bottom of the fifth inning to extend the lead to 3-0.

Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Saturday (March 11) when it opens a three-game series at Upper Iowa at 3 p.m.
