KIRKSVILLE, Mo. --
Max Widmar drove in five runs,
Kyle Schulz had five hits and
Jake Kolasinski also drove in five runs leading Wisconsin-Parkside to a split of its non-conference doubleheader against Truman State on Saturday at the Truman Baseball Park.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which is 3-3 on the season, won the first game 13-3 and then dropped a 6-5 extra inning game to the Bulldogs in game two.
Widmar finished the doubleheader 5-for-8 with five RBI and a run scored, while Schulz was 5-for-9 with three runs scored. Kolasinski finished the doubleheader 4-for-7 with three runs scored and five RBI.
Wisconsin-Parkside erupted for 16 hits in game one of the doubleheader led by Schultz who had four hits. Widmar collected three hits, while
Kyohei Makita, Kolasinki and
Nick Janssen each had two hits.
Makita, Thompson, Kolasinski, Widmar and
Bryan Wade all drove in runs for the Rangers in the opener.
Mario Samuel and
Cody Rolshoven combined to limit the Bulldogs to seven hits and two earned runs over nine innings. Samuel, who picked up the win, went 6.2 innings and permitted six hits, two earned runs and struck out six batters. Rolshoven pitched the final 2.1 innings and allowed just one hit and struck out one.
The Rangers jumped on the Bulldogs early in game one by scoring seven runs in the first two innings.
Schulz led off the top of the first inning by lacing a triple to right and gave the Rangers a 1-0 lead when Makita followed with an RBI single to left centerfield.
Zach Thompson drew a walk and Kolasinski singled up the middle to plate Makita and increase the Rangers lead to 2-0. Widmar capped the first inning outburst with a sacrifice fly that brought home Thompson and upped the Wisconsin-Parkside lead to 3-0.
Wisconsin-Parkside tacked on four runs in the second inning to increase the lead to 7-0.
With one out, Schulz began the Rangers second-inning rally by reaching on an error. Makita followed with a single to right, but the Bulldogs recorded the second out of the inning on a fielder's choice which retired Schulz.
Kolasinski ripped a two-run double to left that brought home Makita and Thompson and increased the Wisconsin-Parkside lead to 5-0.
Janssen singled to right to advance Kolasinski to third and Widmar doubled to left scoring both runners and increasing the Rangers lead to 7-0.
Truman State, which is 3-6 on the season, scored three times in the bottom of the third inning to cut the lead to 7-3, but the Rangers answered with three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
The Rangers loaded the bases in the fourth inning when Thompson was hit by a pitch, Kolasinski walked and Janssen singled to right. Widmar followed with a single to left center scoring Thompson and Kolasinski increasing the lead to 9-3.
Bryan Wade brought home the final run of the inning, which upped the lead to 10-3, with an RBI groundout that scored Janssen.
Wade hit a two-run double in the sixth inning and Thompson capped the scoring with an RBI single in the ninth inning.
Makita, Janssen, Kolasinski and Widmar each had two hits in game two for the Rangers, while Schulz, Thompson and
Domenic Hammudeh each had one hit.
Mason Martin started for the Rangers and went 5.0 innings and allowed three earned runs and struck out one.
Matt Skarzynski and
Joseph Plaud pitched a combined inning of scoreless relief.
The Rangers jumped out to an early lead in game two by scoring a pair of runs. Schulz began in the first inning with a single and advanced to second on a groundout. Another groundout moved Schulz to third and Kolasinski delivered a two-out single that gave Wisconsin-Parkside a 1-0 lead.
After moving up a base on a wild pitch, Kolasinski scored when Janssen produced an RBI single giving the Rangers a 2-0 lead.
Truman State tied the game with single runs in the second and fourth innings, but the Rangers regained the lead with a run in the top of the sixth inning.
With one out, Janssen reached on a bunt single and scampered to second on a Bulldog throwing error. Janssen moved to third on a groundout and came in to score when Hammudeh singled to left giving Wisconsin-Parkside a 3-2 lead.
The Bulldogs answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the Rangers once again rallied to take the lead.
With two outs, Thompson was hit by a pitch and Kolasinski followed with a double to left that scored Thompson to give Wisconsin-Parkside a 4-3 lead. Truman State answered with a run to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings.
Widmar tripled down the rightfield line to open the eighth inning for the Rangers. Pinch-runner
Troy Bittenbender gave the Rangers the lead for the final time in the game at 5-4 when he scored on a wild pitch.
The Bulldogs rallied to win the game in the bottom of the eighth inning with back-to-back doubles and a bases-loaded walk.
The two teams will conclude the series with a doubleheader on Sunday (March 5) beginning at 12 p.m.
