SOMERS, Wis. -- Despite dominating much of the play, the Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer team lost to visiting Illinois Springfield 1-0 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match on Friday at Wood Road Field.
The Rangers held a 7-0 advantage in shots late in the first period, but the Prairie Stars made their first shot of the match count. Following a throw, Illinois Springfield hit a cross which caromed off several players before Emily Matsen picked up the loose ball and beat
Adrianna Bratel with two seconds remaining in the opening stanza to put UIS ahead 1-0.
Wisconsin-Parkside, which dropped to 4-4-1 overall and 4-3 in GLVC play, had several good looks at goal in the second period but couldn't beat UIS keeper Courtney Johnson.
The Rangers appeared to have gotten on the board in the 61st minute, but a goal by
Lauren Bialas was disallowed when UWP was whistled off sides.
In the 74th minute,
Brooke Munroe lofted a shot on goal but Johnson punched the attempt away preserving the lead. The Rangers had another chance a minute later, but a header by
Taylor Burek was saved by Johnson.
The best scoring chance for Wisconsin-Parkside came in the opening period when
Lexi Porter fired a shot from in the box that tipped off of the hands of Johnson and ricocheted off the crossbar keeping the contest tied at 0-0.
Wisconsin-Parkside finished the match with an 11-5 advantage in shots.
Vianey Hernandez led UWP with three shots, while
Jillian Hetfleisch, Porter and Bialas each finished with two shots for the Rangers.
Bratel made three saves in goal for Wisconsin-Parkside, but dropped to 1-2-1 on the season, while Johnson improved to 5-4 with the win.
Illinois Springfield improved to 6-4 overall and 3-4 in conference play with the victory.
Wisconsin-Parkside returns to action on Sunday (Oct. 2) when it hosts McKendree at 2:30 p.m. at Wood Road Field.
