SOMERS, Wis. (May 8, 2016)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team rallied to a doubleheader split to close out the season on Sunday, earning the series win against Great Lakes Valley Conference rival McKendree University at Oberbruner Field. The Rangers fell 10-1 in the opener before taking the nightcap 6-2 to cap off Senior Day.
Â
In the opener, Ranger pitchers combined for 12 strikeouts, including 10 from starter
Tyler Jandron but it was not enough as the Bearcats (15-34, 7-21 GLVC) stole the win to avoid a series sweep. McKendree plated a single run in the first before adding a pair of scores in both the third and fourth innings. The Bearcat edge grew to 6-0 in the sixth before UW-Parkside (12-31, 7-19 GLVC) answered with a run of its own in the bottom of the frame.
Â
Kyohei Makita singled through the right side with two outs, bringing in
Kyle Schulz who reached on a base hit to center field for what proved to be the lone run for the Rangers in the game. McKendree padded its edge in the seventh, plating four en route to the 10-1 win.
Â
Jandron absorbed the loss despite collecting 10 punchouts in six innings of work. McKendree's Josh Tonozzi netted the complete game win, allowing just four hits while striking out six.
Â
A big seventh inning proved the difference-maker in game two with the Rangers rallying to the 6-2 win to finish the series with three wins.
Â
McKendree opened the scoring with a single run in the second before the Rangers matched the scoreline in the bottom of the same inning with a
Bobby Neylon single plating
Nick Janssen.
Â
The Bearcats pushed ahead in the fourth with another single run only to be matched by UW-Parkside in the bottom of the inning.
DJ Peltz led off the inning with a double to right center before scoring with two outs to tie the game at 2-2.
Â
Schulz provided the first fireworks of the seventh, hitting a single to right field to score both Neylon and Janssen. A
Kyohei Makita sacrifice bunt brought in Schulz before an
Andrew Luscomb single allowed
Zach Thompson to touch home plate, giving Parkside the 6-2 buffer.
Â
The Rangers collected 12 hits in game two with Neylon and
Juan Bowers both collecting a pair of hits.
Â
Cody Rolshoven tallied the win, pitching 5 2/3 innings of long relief and striking out eight while allowing no earned runs. McKendree's Sam Lidisky was burdened with the loss, allowing six earned runs in 6 2/3 innings of action.
Â
Sunday was Senior Day with
