(Apr. 1, 2015)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball team stunned Division I University of Wisconsin-Green Bay 10-2 in a mercy rule shortened opener before the defending Horizon League Champions exacted revenge in game two, pouring on nine runs in one inning in a 12-4 victory to level the series on Wednesday at Phoenix Field.
In the opener, the Rangers (5-22) pushed across runs in each of the first four innings including a five-run outburst in the second inning en route to the mercy rule victory.Â
Madison Manders led off the game with a double, eventually scoring on a Phoenix fielding error. UW-Green Bay (9-13) answered in the bottom of the first with a leadoff homer followed by consecutive outfield hits to claim a 2-1 advantage.
Â
The Parkside offense came alive in the second inning, stringing together six hits and plating five runs to reestablish the lead. Manders singled up the middle to score
Carly Dundee to tie the game with two outs before
Kalli Gosser belted a hit down the right field line to score
Samantha Magruder to give the visitors the 3-2 edge. UW-Parkside continued to batter the Phoenix pitching staff with
Megan Holderby doubling in a pair of runs while
Courtney Ellingson plated Holderby. When the dust settled, Parkside owned a 6-2 lead after two innings of action.
Â
Dundee led off the third inning with a solo home run before blasting a three run home run the following inning, giving the Rangers a 10-2 edge. UWGB loaded the bases in the bottom of the fifth in an effort to extend the game but a groundout ended the inning for the Phoenix and enacted the mercy rule.
Â
Dundee was dominant both at the plate and inside the circle, accruing three hits and two home runs with four RBIs offensively, while also collecting the complete game win. The sophomore righthander allowed just four hits during the game, including just one base knock after the first inning of play. 2014 All-Horizon League selection Briana Cavin suffered the loss for UWGB, surrendering six earned runs in just two innings of action.
In the nightcap, it was a nine run Phoenix scoring binge in the second inning that ultimately derailed the Rangers, settling for a doubleheader split.
UW-Parkside again capitalized on a Green Bay fielding miscue in the opening frame with Dundee safely reaching base on an error with two outs as Ellingson and Manders scored for the early 2-0 advantage.
Green Bay stormed back in the second inning, plating nine unearned runs off just six hits, including a grand slam from Hailey Mohrfeld and a two-run blast from Abby Brinkmeier.
Jordan Nichols hit a two-run home run in the top of the third, clearing the center field fence to score
Savannah Wells but the Phoenix tallied two runs of their own in the third before pushing across a single score in the fourth inning to conclude the scoring.
The Rangers collected eight hits in game two with Ellingson finishing two-for-three at the dish.
Amber Ramos absorbed the loss, striking out six and yielding no earned runs in the four inning effort while UWGB's Heather Sanderson tallied the win, striking out three in 3 2/3 innings of work.
The Rangers are idle tomorrow before returning to Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Friday afternoon, hosting the University of Illinois Springfield in a twinbill beginning at 3 p.m. at the Case Complex.
