(Mar. 30, 2015)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside softball squad had 12th-ranked University of Indianapolis against the ropes in game two on Monday but was unable to close out the nationally-ranked foe, dropping both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at the Case Complex. The Rangers stranded 17 runners on base over the course of the twinbill, falling 8-0 and 4-2 to the Greyhounds.
In the nightcap, the Rangers (4-19, 0-10 GLVC) had the Greyhounds (22-6, 9-1 GLVC) on edge after a
Alexis Simone double to center field scored
Courtney Ellingson and
Therese Jender to give the hosts the 2-1 edge in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Megan Holderby drew a one-out walk before advancing to second on a Ellingson single to right field. Jender pinch ran for Holderby before ultimately scoring on Simone's double to seize the lead for the Green and White.
UIndy tied the game in the sixth with a two-out base hit, scoring the side's first run since pushing across an unearned score in the top of the first. The Greyhounds pulled away in the top of the seventh with Taylor Russell belting a two run home run to reclaim the lead for Indianapolis. Parkside had one final chance in the bottom of the seventh but the Rangers were retired in order by UIndy's Morgan Foley who tallied her second win of the afternoon after logging 3 1/3 innings of relief work and striking out four.
Ellingson paced the Rangers at the plate, helping her own cause with a two-for-three effort, while suffering the loss in the circle despite striking out 10 in the complete game effort.
In the opener, UW-Parkside twice hand the bases loaded with one out but was unable to turn base runners into runs, falling 8-0 in six innings.
UIndy raced out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning but the Rangers loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, getting a single through the right side from
Kalli Gosser while Holderby and
Morgan Dastych both drew walks. Parkside's scoring opportunity was quickly shut down with UIndy ace Foley collecting a pair of strikeouts to nullify the threat.
The Greyhounds added four more runs in the third, pushing its edge to 7-0.
UW-Parkside threatened again in the fifth with
Madison Manders and Holderby both drawing walks sandwiched around a Gosser single to juice the bases with one out. Once again UIndy buckled down, inducing an infield popup and netting a strikeout to escape the inning unscathed. Indianapolis pushed across a single run in the sixth to conclude the scoring.
Gosser led the Ranger offense in the opener, finishing two-for-three.
Carly Dundee was hit with the loss, tossing the opening three innings before giving way to
Amber Ramos who fanned five batters and allowed just one run over the final three innings of action. UIndy's Foley notched the win, striking out eight, allowing just two hits but issuing six walks.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Tuesday, traveling to Romeoville, Illinois, to face arch rival Lewis University in a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
