(Apr. 19, 2014)-- For the second straight day, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team earned a doubleheader split, opening Saturday with a 7-6 setback to host University of Illinois Springfield before downing the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division rival 11-8 in the nightcap.
In the opener, the host Prairie Stars (22-18, 14-14 GLVC) exploded for five runs in the first inning, holding on for the 7-6 victory. Illinois Springfield added a single run in the bottom of the third, pushing its advantage to 6-0.
The Rangers (10-23, 8-18 GLVC) got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, plating four runs to pull within two. A fielding error plated

Parkside tied the contest in the top of the seventh with a
DJ Peltz double scoring
Nick Janssen and DuCharme. In the bottom of the seventh, Adam Unes provided the winning score, belting a walkoff double down the line with two outs to plate Blake Baker who led off the frame with a base hit.
Cunningham led the Rangers at the plate, finishing two-for-four.
Pitcher
Mario Samuel tossed the opening four innings and struck out three before making way for
Coty Ortiz.
Cole Grenier suffered the loss while UIS's Kyle Schildroth secured the win, coming in and pitching the final inning.
In game two, the Rangers opened the scoring in the second with
Trent Muscat singling in Ruediger. UW-Parkside doubled its advantage the next inning with Peltz belting a solo home run for the 2-0 lead.
The Prairie Stars pushed across runs in the fourth and fifth innings to tie the game at 2-2.
Zach Thompson plated Ruediger in the sixth to recapture the lead before UIS poured on five runs in the bottom of the frame to grab the 7-3 edge.
Parkside reclaimed the lead in the seventh with a five-run outburst. Peltz drove in the frame's opening score before a
Nick Janssen single to center field scoring a pair.
Kris Zarek doubled in a score while a throwing error allowed Zarek to score for the inning's fifth run.
Each team added a run in the eighth inning before the visiting Rangers tacked on two runs in the ninth with
Zach Cunningham doubling in Thompson and Muscat.
UW-Parkside tallied 17 hits in the game with Peltz, Janssen and Muscat all finishing with three hits.
Josh Serio claimed the win, striking out three in six innings of action before giving way to
Joseph Plaud. Plaud handled the final three frames, fanning two and allowing just one hit to earn the save. UIS's Robert Spath was hit with the loss, allowing two runs in 2/3 innings of action.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Tuesday, squaring off against the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee at Simmons Field in Kenosha.
