(Apr. 13, 2014)-- It took almost 7 1/2 hours longer than planned and concluded at a crosstown venue but the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team managed to squeeze in its doubleheader against 18th-ranked University of Southern Indiana, dropping both ends of the Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division twinbill at Carthage College's Augie Schmidt Field on Saturday night. The Rangers were edged 2-1 in the opener before faltering 7-0 in game two.
After four innings of scoreless ball in the opener, nationally-ranked USI scratched across a run, utilizing a sacrifice fly. The Screaming Eagles (24-8, 16-4 GLVC) doubled their advantage in the sixth, scoring on a wild pitch.
Pinch hitter
Ryan Ruediger belted a two-out single up the middle in the bottom of the seventh for the Rangers (8-21, 6-16 GLVC), scoring
Juan Bowers but it was not enough as a flyout by the next batter ended the game 2-1 in favor of USI.
Mario Samuel was hit with the loss, striking out seven and allowing just one earned run in the complete game effort. USI's Matt Bowles claimed the win, striking out four in six innings of action while Matt Chavarria notched the save.
In game two, five runs over a two-inning stretch unglued the Rangers and provided the doubleheader sweep for the East Division leading Eagles.
USI scored two runs in the third inning before piling on three in the fourth. Southern Indiana netted two insurance runs in the eighth inning to conclude the scoring.
Eric DuCharme led the Rangers at the dish in game two, finishing two-for-four.
Josh Serio suffered the loss, striking out seven and allowing five earned runs in seven innings of work. USI's David Toth claimed the win, fanning five in eighth innings of action.
The day was slated to begin at noon at Oberbruner Field in Somers before torrential rain and lightning delayed the contest. Oberbruner was deemed unplayable, forcing the series a nighttime start after the conclusion of the Carthage-Wheaton College twinbill at Augie Schmidt Field. The Ranger-Eagle series commenced at 7:25 p.m. Added drama during the afternoon was provided by the visitors with the USI bus needing a tow after getting stuck in the grass next to Oberbruner Field.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Wednesday, taking on GLVC East nemesis Lewis University at 12 p.m.
