SOMERS, Wis. (Apr. 11, 2014)-- Enjoying the luxuries of home for the first time all season, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside upset #18 University of Southern Indiana 3-2 in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division battle to open Friday at Oberbruner Field before falling 9-3 in the nightcap to split the twinbill.

A passed ball in the eighth inning provided the winning score in game one as the Rangers (8-19, 6-14 GLVC) slipped past the nationally-ranked and GLVC East Division leading Screaming Eagles (22-8, 14-4 GLVC).

USI opened the scoring in the third inning with a solo home run from Hamilton Carr. USI doubled its advantage in the fourth before the Rangers got on the board in the bottom of the fifth.

The Rangers received singles from D.J. Peltz and Zach Thompson to start the fifth before a Kris Zarek walk loaded the bases. Zach Cunningham showed patience at the plate, drawing an RBI walk to score Peltz, cutting the gap to just one run at 2-1.

A Peltz RBI double to right center field scored Derek Tuttle to tie the game in the sixth before Jake Kolasinski scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the eighth in what proved to be the winning score. Kolasinski reached base with a leadoff double before advancing to third on an Eric DuCharme bunt single.

DuCharme and Peltz led the offense for the Rangers in game one, both finishing two-for-four.

Joseph Plaud claimed the win, pitching the final 2 2/3 innings and striking out three while allowing no hits in relief of John Perez who tossed 6 1/3 innings and fanned five batters. USI's Andrew Mercer suffered the loss, allowing one earned run in 2 2/3 innings of action.

In game two, a six-run outburst by Southern Indiana provided more than enough damage for the Eagles to salvage the series split.

The Screaming Eagles piled on six runs in the fourth inning, including a grand slam from Kyle Kempf. UW-Parkside answered with three runs in the fifth inning before USI added three more in the sixth inning to close the scoring.

All three Ranger runs came off the bat of pinch-hitter Ryan Ruediger who belted a three run shot with one out, scoring Thompson and DJ Peltz who both collected base hits.

Thompson powered the Rangers at the plate in game two, finishing two-for-three while scoring a run.

Cole Kroncke was tagged with the loss, lasting five innings and striking out five while Jonathon Wandling tallied the complete game win, fanning seven and allowing three earned runs.

The Rangers and Eagles conclude the series on Saturday with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
