ROLLA, Mo. (Mar. 8, 2014)-- Returning to the diamond after a nearly two-week hiatus, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team didn't skip a beat, capitalizing on an error in extra innings to down host Missouri University S&T 7-6 on Saturday afternoon at the S&T Baseball Field. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to sleet and freezing rain.
The Rangers (1-4) drew first blood against the Great Lakes Valley Conference rival, pushing across three runs in the top of the fourth inning.
Jake Kolasinski led off the frame with a single to right center field, advancing to second after
Juan Bowers safely reached base on an error.
DJ Peltz cleared the bases with a single up the middle before crossing the plate on a
Patrick Cottrell triple to right field, giving the visitors the 3-0 edge.
The host Miners (4-7) got on the board in the bottom of the fourth, utilizing a single through the left side to plate a run before piling on four runs in the fifth to seize the 5-3 lead.
The Rangers answered in the top of the sixth, tying the game after pushing across a pair of runs. A
Kris Zarek single and a throwing error allowed Cottrell to net the opening run of the frame before a
Zach Cunningham infield single scored
Trent Muscat to knot the score.
A Miner fielding error with the bases loaded and two outs plated two Ranger runs, giving the visitors the 7-5 advantage in the top of the 10th inning.
Eric DuCharme and Muscat drew walks before advancing on a
Kris Zarek single to load the bases. An S&T fielding miscue allowed Cunningham to safely reach base while DuCharme and Muscat scored the go-ahead runs.
Missouri S&T scratched across a run in the bottom of the 10th before a double play ended the inning, giving the Rangers the 7-6 win.
Zarek led the Rangers at the plate, finishing game one three-for-five while DuCharme was two-for-four.
Mario Samuel claimed the win on the mound, tossing 5 1/3 innings in long relief, yielding two runs and striking out three. S&T's Jacob Hinton absorbed the loss, allowing two runs and issuing three walks in 1 1/3 innings of action.
The game was officially counted as a non-conference game for both squads. The teams will attempt to close out the series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m.
