MIAMI SHORES, Fla. (Feb. 23, 2014)-- A walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth inning put the visiting University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team on the wrong end of a 14-13 affair against Barry University on Sunday afternoon at Feinbloom Field to close out the four-game series in the Sunshine State.
Luis Rios-Reyes emerged as the hero for the Buccaneers (12-2) in the bottom on the ninth, belting a two-run home run over the left field fence with one out, plating pinch runner Nick Turco and himself to secure the win. Turco relived Mike Diaz on the basepath after he reached base on a five pitch walk.
The Rangers (0-4) took the lead in the top of the ninth, plating three runs for the 13-12 lead.
Kris Zarek singled through the left side to drive in a pair of runs before a Barry fielding error allowed
Zach Cunningham to score and reclaim the lead for Parkside.
Host Barry opened the scoring in the first inning, pushing across three runs. UW-Parkside tied the game the next half inning with three of its own, scoring a run on a fielding error while a
Trent Muscat single scored both
Eric DuCharme and
DJ Peltz.
Four walks and a triple, allowed the Buccaneers to net four runs in the second, securing the 7-3 lead. Parkside tallied a single run in the third with Barry returning the favor with a run of its own in the fourth. The Rangers finally tied the game in the sixth with a four-run outburst before seizing the lead with a pair of scores in the top of the seventh.
The Rangers pounded out five hits in the sixth inning. A throwing error on a Zarek sacrifice bunt plated a pair of runs before getting RBI singles from Cunningham and
Jake Kolasinski.
In the seventh,
Trent Muscat got things started for the Rangers, blasting a double to left center field before scoring on a Zarek double down the left field line. Zarek would later score on a Cunningham single, giving the visitors the 10-8 advantage.
Barry quickly reclaimed the lead, securing three runs in the bottom of the seventh and pushing across one more in the eighth inning for the 12-10 lead.
UW-Parkside outhit Barry by a 15-7 margin, with five Rangers finishing with multiple hits. Cunningham was three-for-six with a pair of RBIs while Muscat was three-for-four with two RBIs. Zarek tallied four RBIs, scoring three runs and notched two hits while
Juan Bowers and
Zach Thompson each collected a pair of hits.
Parkside's
John Perez (0-2) was saddled with the loss, entering the game in the top of the ninth. The Rangers utilized four pitchers on the afternoon, combining for six strikeouts. Barry's Joeanthony Rivera (2-0) tallied the win, allowing three runs and striking out one in one inning of work.
The Rangers return to the diamond on Saturday, March 1, heading to Overland Park, Kan., for a neutral site showdown with Winona State University.
