(Nov. 9, 2014)-- Four different Rangers found the back of the net as the fourth-ranked and top-seeded University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer squad steamrolled seventh-seeded Missouri University S&T 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at Wood Road Field to claim the program's fifth Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament Championship.
The indomitable Rangers (17-0-3) were a buzzsaw the entire tournament, outscoring its three opponents by a combined 9-1 margin to claim the GLVC Tournament title for the fifth time while securing the regular season and tournament titles for the third time in program history. UW-Parkside previously won tournament titles in 2010, 2008, 2004 and 2003 while winning the regular season and tournament in 2008 and 2004.
The home side needed just 74 seconds to open the scoring on Sunday with
Taylor Schiffer-Jander flashing some moves to fake out the Miner defense and set up a laser shot for goal number seven of the season for the sophomore.
Kelsey Armour added to the Ranger tally in the 20th minute, redirecting a
Niekie Pellens corner kick into the back of the net for her fifth score of the year. The Miners (9-10-1) cut the deficit to just a goal in the 28th minute with Sabrina Hostler scoring on a corner kick from Alex McCord. The goal snapped Parkside's shutout streak at 548 minutes and was just the fifth goal conceded all season by the Green and White.
UW-Parkside enjoyed a 2-1 lead after 45 minutes of action, outshooting visiting Missouri S&T by a 10-2 margin.
Jillian Hetfleisch upped the Ranger lead back to two goals in the 53rd minute, scoring her seventh goal of the 2014 campaign while GLVC Freshman of the Year
Bailey Reed capped off the scoring in the 56th minute. Reed netted her fifth score off a feed from Pellens, who tallied four assists over the past three days and owns a GLVC leading 15 assists on the season.
UW-Parkside finished the game with a 19-2 edge in shots with the defense not allowing S&T to get off a shot the entire second half.
Goalkeeper
Mallory Geurts made one save in 90 minutes of work to collect the win while her counterpart Kaitlyn Deister made four saves and allowed four goals.
UW-Parkside's GLVC Tournament run began on Nov. 2 with a 3-0 win over eighth-seeded Lewis University in the quarterfinals before blanking fourth-seeded Truman State University 2-0 on Friday in the semifinals.
