(Oct. 5, 2014)-- A penalty kick goal early in the second half was all the offense necessary for the 11th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer team on Sunday afternoon, blanking McKendree University 1-0 at Wood Road Field to remain in first place in the Great Lakes Valley Conference standings.
The game was scoreless heading into the halftime break with the host Rangers (8-0-2, 6-0-2 GLVC) owning a slim 6-4 edge in shots.
UW-Parkside got on the board in the 54th minute, earning a penalty kick after the Bearcats (5-6, 4-4 GLVC) fouled inside the box on a corner kick.
Emily Konior converted the penalty, beating the keeper on a shot to the lower right corner for her team leading fifth goal of the year. The goal was additionally the sixth career penalty kick successfully converted by the senior.
The Rangers outshot the Bearcats by nearly a 2-to-1 margin during the game, holding a 15-8 edge in shots, including a 7-4 lead in shots on frame.
Goalkeeper
Mallory Geurts earned her eighth clean sheet of the season, making four saves in 90 minutes of work while her counterpart, Taylor Zerbe, suffered the loss with six saves on the afternoon.
With the win, UW-Parkside holds a half-game lead in the GLVC standings after Truman State University (6-1-1 in GLVC) settled for a 0-0 double overtime draw with Rockhurst University on Sunday. The Rangers return to action on Friday, traveling to Saint Louis, Missouri to face Maryville University.
