RENSSELAER, Ind. (Jan. 30, 2014)-- Unable to sustain an early advantage, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's basketball squad suffered a 62-52 setback to Saint Joseph's College on Thursday night inside Scharf Fieldhouse in a Great Lakes Valley Conference East Division showdown.
The Rangers (6-12, 2-8 GLVC) tallied the opening four points of the ballgame and owned a 7-3 edge with just over 15 minutes to play before the host Pumas (5-12, 3-7 GLVC) fought back. The lead exchanged hands five times in the opening half while the score was deadlocked on four occasions before SJC took a 28-22 edge into the locker room at half.
St. Joseph's advantage swelled to 18 points with 5:46 left in the second half but the Rangers hung tough, battling back before ultimately falling by 10.
Gaby Bronson paced the Rangers, finishing one board shy of a double-double, logging 16 points and nine rebounds with six of her boards coming on the offensive end.
Tara Knapstein added 12 points with five rebounds and four assists while
Sarah Mlachnik and
Danielle Slivka each tallied six points.
Jasmyne Reynolds and Kiki Lyons led the Pumas, collecting 18 points apiece while Courtney Kvachkoff added 10.
The loss snaps a 21-game win streak against the Pumas for the Rangers, who last tasted defeat in January of 2003.
UW-Parkside shot 91.7 percent (11-for-12) from the charity stripe but mustered just 34.6 percent (18-for-52) from the floor while host SJC hit 52.2 percent (24-for-46) from the field, including a red-hot 59.1 percent in the second stanza.
The Rangers return to the court on Saturday afternoon, taking on host University of Indianapolis at 1 p.m. (Eastern Time).
