SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 7, 2013)-- Three first half goals were more than enough for the 19th-ranked University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer team on Saturday, overwhelming Michigan Tech University 5-1 in a non-conference match at Wood Road Field.
Kaela Hoecherl opened the scoring in the seventh minute, scoring on a breakaway after
Ashley Meyer chipped the ball over the defense and through to a charging Hoecherl. The Rangers (2-0) doubled their advantage in the 20th minute with
Jasmine Espino scoring her second goal in as many games, with Meyer and
Alex Johnson earning assists.
UW-Parkside upped the advantage to three in the 33rd minute with
Emily Konior connecting the first of two penalty kick goals.
In the second half,
Stephanie Barsuli scored in the 60th minute off a feed from Konior before the two squads endured an almost 90-minute delay due to lightning.
Konior added to her tally with another converted penalty kick three minutes after play restarted in the 68th minute, giving UW-P the 5-0 edge over the defending Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Champions.
The Huskies (1-1) disrupted the shutout in the 83rd minute with Katie Boardman scoring off a pass from Lindsey Van Rooy. The goal broke up the Ranger defense's scoreless streak to open the season at 173 minutes.
