SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 7, 2013)-- Rallying from a deficit on two separate occasions, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's soccer squad salvaged a 2-2 double overtime draw against second-ranked and defending national runner-up Saginaw Valley State University on Saturday in a non-conference clash at Wood Road Field.

"Credit to that team, they had a lot of fight. SVSU was a very organized and quality side and it was a good result for us," said third year head coach Jason Zitzke. "Every year you try and find the identity of the team and how they will react in adversity. We trailed twice and the guys stepped up both times."

The second-ranked Cardinals (0-1-1) struck early, with Tyler Channell chipping the ball over the Ranger goalkeeper in the ninth minute off a feed from Lachlan Savage. The host Rangers (1-0-1) struck back five minutes before halftime with Elliott Schultz beating the keeper courtesy of a Ryan Shogren assist.

The two squads remained deadlocked at intermission with UW-P owning a 13-9 edge in shots in the opening half of play.

Calamity struck in the 51st minute for the Rangers with an own goal as a defender inadvertently headed the ball into the net. UW-Parkside responded with Jorge Ontiveros coming off the bench and netting the equalizer in the 60th minute off a feed from Antonio Gonzalez in what proved to be the final score of the afternoon.

"Bench players really stepped up and we supported each other even when things weren't going our way."

It was a physical contest with 49 fouls called along with nine cautions and one red card issued as the visiting Cardinals were reduced to 10-men for the final 12 minutes of overtime.

SVSU ended the game with a 23-19 edge in shots, including a 12-9 advantage in shots on frame. Saginaw Valley claimed the only two shots during the two 10-minute overtime sessions.

Marcos Perez had a gritty performance in goal for the Rangers, making nine saves in 110 minutes of work while his counterpart, Aaron Gerwig notched seven saves.

"It was a quality weekend and we hope the players continue to stay hungry."

The Rangers close out their three-game homestand and open Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Friday, taking on Saint Joseph's College. Kickoff at Wood Road Field is slated for 3:30 p.m.
