SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 29, 2013)-- Four unanswered goals, including three in the second half, propelled the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer team to a 4-1 victory over Maryville University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference showdown on Sunday afternoon at Wood Road Field.
Maryville (0-7-1, 0-5-1) seized an early lead with Amanda Wiechens finding the back of the net off a feed from Sam Kruse in the 15th minute. The Rangers (5-2-1, 3-2-1GLVC) equalized in the 41st minute with
Darby Moran coming off the bench and collecting the first goal of her collegiate career.
The two sides remained deadlocked at intermission with UW-Parkside owning a 9-6 edge in shots.
Niekie Pellens provided the go-ahead score just 85 seconds into the second half, converting a free kick from about 30 yards out for her first collegiate goal.
Emily Konior increased the buffer to two goals just four minutes later, converting on a free kick of her own as the shot bended past the Saints' wall and into the lower corner of the goal.
Kaela Hoecherl finished up the scoring in the 54th minute, beating the keeper for her team-leading fourth score of the season with
Jasmine Espino earning her third assist of the year.
Mallory Geurts logged the opening 66 minutes in goal, allowing one goal and recording three saves before giving way to
Michelle Girard. Maryville's Mandy Browning absorbed the loss, making one save and yielding four goals in 55 minutes of work.
UW-Parkside returns to the pitch on Friday, hitting the road to face McKendree University with kickoff slated for 5 p.m.
