SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 29, 2013)-- A pair of goals in each half was more than enough as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's soccer team remained unbeaten at Wood Road Field on the season, posting a 4-1 victory over Great Lakes Valley Conference rival Maryville University on Sunday afternoon.
The Rangers' (4-3-1, 3-3 GLVC) opened the scoring in the 14th minute with
Antonio Gonzalez draining a shot off a feed from
Ryan Yang.
"Antonio's one-time blast was a clinical finish," said head coach
Jason Zitzke.
UW-Parkside doubled its lead 10 minutes later with
Jon Gourlay finding the back of the net off a
Thomas Diehl assist. The Rangers took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break, enjoying a 5-2 edge in shots.
Maryville's Gus Reinitz cut the Ranger lead in half in the 59th minute but the Rangers responded with
Ben Kosmider blasting a laser in the 79th minute to increase the UW-P lead back to two goals.
"Kosmider's 35-yard blast dipped perfectly, hitting the crossbar and going in. He saw the keeper off his line and pulled the trigger."
Ryan Shogren capped off the scoring in the 89th minute, collecting a rebound and scoring with Diehl earning his second assist of the contest.
"Everybody in this conference is a difficult game. They threw everything at us in the second half and put numbers forward. We did a good job in the second half closing out, we brought back in some of the older guys and regained the tempo and created some chances."
"The last 15 minutes we did a good job in game management and finishing it off strong. Obviously, it was a good weekend."
Remi Bibal made his debut in goal, making two saves to earn the victory. His counterpart, Josh Richter, tallied six saves for Maryville (0-7, 0-6 GLVC) while allowing four goals.
"For his first collegiate opportunity he did well. The future is bright and its that much better when have two capable guys we can use in the net."
The win is the Rangers' second straight and improves their record at home to 4-0-1 on the season. UW-P hits the road this week, facing McKendree University on Friday at 7:30 p.m.
