LEBANON, Ill. (Apr. 7, 2013)-- Utilizing a three-run sixth inning the University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team rallied to a 4-2 victory on Sunday in the opening game against host McKendree University before stumbling 4-3 in game two in a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader at Hypes Field.
The Rangers (1-15, 1-13 GLVC) opened the scoring early in game one with
Taylor Nehls belting a two-out solo home run. The host Bearcats (14-12, 9-9 GLVC) quickly countered in the bottom of the first, scoring a pair of runs off three hits.
McKendree maintained its edge until the sixth when the Rangers erupted for three runs to secure the win.
Ben Korman led off the inning by drawing a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch. A
Derek Tuttle RBI double down the right field line scored Korman before
Eric DuCharme tallied a double of his own to score Tuttle, giving UW-Parkside the 3-2 lead.
Andrew Hosford tacked on an insurance run the next at bat, hitting an outfield single to score DuCharme in what turned out to be the final run of the contest, giving head coach
Daniel Esposito and his squad their first win of 2013.
Chris Glynn. Tuttle, DuCharme and Hosford all finished with multiple hits while
Casey Doucette tallied the win. Doucette tossed the opening 5 2/3 innings, striking out three.
Jacob Chandler was credited with the save, hurling the final 1 1/3 innings, striking out one and allowing no hits. Josh Tonozzi was hit with the loss for McKendree, allowing four earned runs in six innings of work.
In the nightcap, McKendree thwarted a later Ranger comeback attempt, holding on for the 4-3 win to salvage a doubleheader split. McKendree tallied a pair of scores in the first inning before UW-Parkside equalized the scre with a pair of runs in the fourth.
Ben Korman got things going with a solo home run to lead off the inning while
John Perszyk singled in Nehls to tie the game. The Bearcats quickly answered with a single run in the fourth before taking on another run in the sixth, pushing their advantage to 4-2.
The Rangers attempted a late rally in the top of the ninth. A Perszyk sacrifice fly scored Tuttle, who reached base on a double to close the gap within two.
Eric Abel drew a walk and represented the game tying run but the McKendree reliever Pat Thole struck out the final batter of the afternoon to earn the save.
Korman, Tuttle and Perszyk led the offense, each collecting two hits while Perszyk finished the game with a pair of RBIs.
Andy Stochl was hit with the loss, allowing three earned runs in four innings of work while Jon Trampe was credited with the win, striking out five in six innings or work.
