QUINCY, Ill. (Mar. 23, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team dropped both ends of a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Saturday, suffering a 7-5 setback to host Quincy University in the opener before falling 10-1 in game two.
In the opener, the host Hawks (10-5, 5-1 GLVC) struck first, plating a run in the opening inning before the Rangers (0-6, 0-4 GLVC) knotted the score in the third inning.
Ben Korman opened the top of the third with a single through the left side, later scoring on an RBI single from
Eric DuCharme. QU reclaimed its advantage in the bottom of the frame with Nick Tindall belting a two-run home run. The Hawk's extended their lead to three after Pete Cunningham stole home before the Rangers equalized the score with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Korman and
Kris Zarek collected base hits, both coming home off a double from
Eric DuCharme while
Zach Cunningham tied the contest at four, bringing in DuCharme with an infield single.
Quincy answered in the bottom of the seventh, recapturing the lead with a three-run blast by Joe Williams. UWP pushed across a run in the top of the ninth but could not close the gap, falling 7-5.
DuCharme led the Rangers, finishing game one three-for-five at the plate with three RBIs while Korman was two-for-three.
Josh Geiger tossed the opening six innings for the Rangers, striking out three and allowing four earned runs before handing the reins over to
Alex Rejniak. Rejniak was saddled with the defeat, yielding three earned runs in 2/3 innings of work. QU's Clayton Hicks earned the win, pitching the opening seven frames and striking out six while Teddy Rule earned the save, pitching the ninth and striking out three.
In game two the homestanding Hawks exploded for four runs in the second and fifth innings en route to a 10-1 win.
QU raced out to a 6-0 lead after three innings of action in game two, plating single runs in the first and third innings while bringing in four in the second. UWP got on the board in the fifth with Cunningham drawing a bases loaded walk to bring in
Chris Glynn who led off the inning with a walk.
Quincy piled on four more in the fourth and held on for the 10-1 victory in the seven inning game.
Four pitchers collaborated for the two-hitter for Quincy with Matt McDaniel earned the win after hurling the opening 4 2/3 innings and striking out six. UWP's
Jacob Chandler was tagged with the defeat, striking out three and allowing five earned runs in two innings of work.
The Rangers and Hawks return to the diamond on Sunday with the doubleheader slated to get underway at 12 p.m.
