SAINT LOUIS, Mo. (Mar. 16, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside baseball team was unable to match the firepower of Maryville University on Saturday afternoon, dropping a pair of games to open up the Great Lakes Valley Conference season. The Rangers fell 8-2 in the opener before ending up on the wrong side of a 3-2 affair at Weber Field.
In the opener, the contest was tied at two apiece after three innings of action before the Saints (2-7, 2-0 GLVC) slowly pulled away, tallying single runs in each of the final six innings of play.
Host Maryville opened things up in the second inning, plating a pair of runs. UW-Parkside (0-4, 0-2 GLVC) responded with a run in the bottom of the second with a
Ben Korman single driving in
Chris Glynn. The Rangers knotted the score the next inning with a
John Perszyk sacrifice fly bringing home
Zach O'Haver. The Saints reclaimed the lead in the top of the fourth with a run and slowly added to their advantage with runs coming across in the fifth, sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth innings to secure the six-run victory.
Korman led the Rangers in the opener, finishing two-for-four at the plate.
Jacob Chandler absorbed the loss on the mound, tossing the opening five and 1/3 innings and allowing four earned runs while striking out four.
Cole Kroncke logged the final 3 2/3 innings, yielding one earned run and striking out one.
MU's Patrick Jacobs tallied the win, hurling the opening six frames and collecting three strikeouts while allowing two earned runs.
In the nightcap, Maryville staked an early 3-1 lead and weathered a late Ranger comeback attempt to earn the win in the seven inning contest. A leadoff double set the table for an RBI single from Mike Wilkinson, giving the Saints' the 1-0 edge in the first inning.
The Rangers tied the ballgame in the bottom of the second, manufacturing a run after a leadoff walk. Glynn opened the inning with a base on balls before advancing to second on a
Zach Cunningham single. A Korman sac bunt pushed Glynn to third before coming home on a
Kris Zarek groundout to tie the game.
Maryville answered with single runs in the third and fifth innings to mushroom its lead to 3-1.
UW-Parkside scratched across another run in the sixth but could get no closer, suffering the one run setback.
Derek Tuttle drew a walk to begin the inning before advancing to second on a Glynn base hit. A Cunningham single pushed Tuttle to third before coming home when Korman hit into a double play.
The Rangers had the tying run on in the bottom of the seventh but could not bring it in, giving the Saints' the doubleheader sweep.
Cunningham led the Rangers offensively, finishing two-for-three at the plate.
Josh Geiger went the distance and was hit with the loss, pitching all seven innings, striking out nine while allowing just two earned runs. His counterpart Matt Staback earned the victory on the bump, pitching five innings and striking out two while Brett Grempler tallied the save, entering in the seventh and striking out two.
The Rangers and Saints return to the diamond for a doubleheader on Sunday.
