SOMERS, Wis. (Oct 18, 2013)-- A
Jasmine Espino goal in the 74th minute provided the decisive score as the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer team extended its win streak to four games and its unbeaten run to seven games, downing William Jewell College 2-1 on Friday afternoon in a Great Lakes Valley Conference match at Wood Road Field.
The Rangers (9-2-2, 7-2-2 GLVC) drew first blood with a
Vianey Hernandez goal in the sixth minute of play. Hernandez collected her first goal of the season after corralling a rebounded shot by
Katie Gavin in a scramble in front of the goalmouth.
The Cardinals (7-6-1, 5-5-1 GLVC) answered just 85 seconds before intermission with Sarah Franklin finding the back of the net to equalize the score and snap the Rangers' shutout streak at 500 minutes.
Espino emerged as the hero in the 74th minute, blasting the ball past the keeper off a feed from
Kaela Hoecherl. The goal was Espino's fourth of the season and third game-winner of 2013, giving the home side its fourth straight win while improving to 6-0-1 over the last seven games.
Mallory Geurts secured the win in goal, making three saves in 90 minutes of work while Jewell's Kelli Sontag suffered the loss, allowing two goals and recording three saves.
UW-P and William Jewell finished the contest level in shots, both claiming 10 in the contest.
With the win, head coach
Troy Fabiano stands one victory shy of becoming just the 21st active coach in NCAA Division II to eclipse the 200-win barrier. Fabiano owns a career mark of 199-70-25 over the last 16 seasons with the Rangers.
UW-Parkside closes out its regular season home schedule on Sunday, squaring off against Rockhurst University at 12 p.m.
