SOMERS, Wis. (Oct 18, 2013)-- A goal in each half proved more than enough for the University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's soccer squad on Friday afternoon, downing William Jewell College 2-0 in a physical Great Lakes Valley Conference battle at Wood Road Field.

Elliott Schultz provided the opening score of the Rangers (7-5-1, 6-5 GLVC) with Thomas Diehl earning the assist as UW-Parkside enjoyed a one goal lead at the halftime break, outshooting the Cardinals (5-9, 3-8 GLVC) by a 9-4 margin.

"Schultz brought a lot of energy to the team, making his first start in a while. He really was a spark for us today," said head coach Jason Zitzke.

The game was hotly contested in the second half before Jorge Ontiveros closed the book on William Jewell, scoring an unassisted goal in the 88th minute, utilizing some fancy footwork to dribble past the defense and beat the keeper.

Marcos Perez secured his third clean sheet of the season, logging all 90 minutes between the pipes and recording six saves. His counterpart, Shane Van Hooser, suffered the loss, making seven saves but allowing two goals.

"The back line played well today," said Zitzke. "Jewell had some great opportunities. The second half Marcos Perez made three game changing saves."

UW-P owned an 18-13 edge in shots in physical affair featuring a combined 38 fouls and eight yellow cards.

"As a group we really cleaned things up from a week ago and the guys were focused."

The Rangers close out their home slate on Sunday, facing Rockhurst University at 2:30 p.m.
