Rangers Rally Past Prairie Stars, 3-2

SOMERS, Wis. (Oct. 11, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's soccer team weathered a rocky start on Friday before rallying to a 3-2 victory against Great Lakes Valley Conference nemesis University of Illinois Springfield to remain unbeaten at Wood Road Field.

The Rangers (6-4-1, 5-4 GLVC) yielded two goals in the opening eight minutes of play before regrouping and tallying the final three scores of the afternoon to improve to 5-0-1 at home in 2013.

Mark Williams needed just 99 seconds to get the visiting Prairie Stars' (5-7, 4-5 GLVC) on the board, finding the back of the net off a feed from Mark Czarny. Williams doubled UIS's tally just five minutes and 26 seconds later with an unassisted strike in the eighth minute of action.

"We came out real flat this afternoon," said head coach Jason Zitzke. "Give credit to UIS, they came at us and Perez had some great saves to keep us in the game."

Ryan Shogren put the Rangers on the scoreboard with a goal in the 26th minute with Elliott Schultz claiming the assist as UW-Parkside went into the halftime intermission trailing 2-1..

The Rangers seized control in the second half with Thomas Diehl netting the equalizer off a Milan Filopovic free kick in the 48th minute while Edwin Gomez provided the game winner in the 71st minute of action with a header off a Jon Gourlay corner kick.

UW-Parkside finished the contest with a 15-14 edge in shots, including a 10-5 advantage in the second half.

"The second half I'm very proud of how we responded. The energy we had was great and the guys really did what they had to do."

"It showed a lot of character how the team responded to the adversity and I'm very proud of them."

Marcos Perez earned the win in goal for the Rangers, logging all 90 minutes and recording a pair of saves. Illinois Springfield's Jack Turanchik suffered the loss yielding three goals and tallying two saves.

The Rangers continue their homestand on Sunday, welcoming University of Southern Indiana to Wood Road Field for a 2:30 p.m. showdown.
