NWCA Duals Bracket
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (Jan. 12, 2013)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside wrestling squad is headed to the semifinals of the National Wrestling Coaches Association/Cliff Keen National Duals after knocking off a pair of top ten squads on Saturday at the Prairie Capital Convention Center. The 17th-ranked Rangers opened the day with an 18-13 win over top-ranked University of Nebraska-Kearney before rolling past No. 8 University of Findlay, 26-13.
The Rangers (3-0) opened the competition with a big victory over the defending national champion Lopers (2-1). Ryan McQuade earned a 6-4 victory by decision over UNK's Jake Gentzler at the 125 pound weight class while
Joseph Her tipped Ryan Bauer 4-3 at 133.
Dillon Bera blanked Chase White 3-0 at 157, the Rangers lone victory between 141 and 174, while
Matt Gille, Davion Willis and
James Malechek claimed victories at the three biggest weight classes to secure the win.
Gille downed Mark Fiala 3-1 at 184 while Willis out pointed Matt Lenagh 6-2 at the 197 weight class while
James Malechek rolled to a 4-0 victory at 285 pounds.
"We thought we matched up well against Kearney and we could beat them," said head coach
Gregg Lewis. "The captains bought into it and so did the coaches. We told the team all week to come in and compete your best because that is all you can control and we certainly did that."
Against Findlay (6-2), the Oilers swept the three lightest weight classes but the Rangers claimed six of the remaining seven weight classes, including two victories by pin and one by tech fall.
Daniel Argueta rebounded from his loss earlier in the day, pinning Findlay's Jan Steven Ulinski 2 minutes and 37 seconds into his bout at 149 pounds while Bera finished the day 2-0, earning a 16-0 tech fall victory at 157.
Nick Fishback prevailed 3-0 at the 165 pound weight class while
Josh Anthony tallied the second pin of the match, nesting the Oilers' Mason True at 174.
Willis downed Ashton Brown 2-0 at 197 pounds while Malechek edged Andrew Tumlin 2-1 at the 285 weight class.
"Findlay wrestles a lot like us," said Lewis, now in his second year as head coach. "We were in an early hole but Argueta's pin really got us going.
Josh Anthony had a big win for us and we're extremely pleased with the result and the hard work our guys have put in. I'm looking forward to tomorrow."
The Rangers return to the mat at 11 a.m. tomorrow for the semifinals where they will face fourth-ranked Saint Cloud State University. The Huskies advanced to the semis after posting a 40-7 victory over University of North Carolina-Pembroke in the opening round before downing No. 5 Upper Iowa University 29-12 in the quarterfinals.
