SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 7, 2012)-- Grabbing an early lead and never relenting, the University of Wisconsin-Parkside women's soccer team emerged from Wood Road Field on Friday afternoon with a convincing 2-0 victory over Missouri S&T University in the Great Lakes Valley Conference opener for both teams.

The Rangers (2-0-1, 1-0 GLVC) opened the scoring in the 7th minute with Emily Konior converting a penalty kick after a Miner defender took down Ashley Meyer in the box. UWP doubled its advantage shortly before halftime with Kelsey Armour coming off the bench and tallying her second strike of the season off a feed from Alex Johnson in the 38th minute. UWP dominated possession throughout the game while ending with a 16-6 edge in shots including a 12-4 edge on shots on target.

Michelle Girard recorded her first clean sheet of the season, logging all 90 minutes in goal and recording four saves. S&T's Madison Gibler had a busy day between the posts, recording nine saves on the afternoon.

The Rangers and Miners (2-1, 0-1 GLVC) both entered the contest ranked in the Central Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. S&T came in with a No. 7 ranking while UWP was No. 8.

UW-Parkside returns to the pitch on Sunday, hosting Drury University, who comes to Wisconsin ranked fourth in the region. Kickoff at Wood Road Field is slated for 2:30 p.m.
