SOMERS, Wis. (Sept. 7, 2012)-- The University of Wisconsin-Parkside men's soccer team opened up its Great Lakes Valley Conference slate on the right foot on Friday afternoon, overcoming a one-goal deficit to prevail 2-1 over Missouri S&T University at Wood Road Field.

The Rangers (2-0-1, 1-0 GLVC) dodged an early bullet as a Peter Vaccaro goal just 2 minutes and 49 seconds into the contest was waved off after the linesmen determined he was in an offsides position. UWP and the Miners (1-1-1, 0-1 GLVC) battled to a scoreless stalemate after 45 minutes of action with the Rangers holding an 8-5 edge in shots.

S&T opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with reserve Timmy Kenny scoring off an Adam Stensland assist, snapping the Rangers' shutout streak at 251 minutes.

UWP rallied just four minutes later with Jorge Ontiveros tallying his team-leading fourth goal of the year off a feed from Marc Glidden to equalize the score in the 56th minute. Austin Robb emerged as the hero in the 83rd minute, beating the Miner keeper for what held up to be the game winner despite the homestanding Rangers getting reduced to just 10 men for the final four minutes of play.

"This was a typical conference game," said head coach Jason Zitzke. "It was a struggle. Both teams had stretches where they played great soccer and not much separates the top from the bottom in the GLVC."

Nick Huftalin recorded six saves, including several crucial stops down the stretch to earn the victory in goal while his counterpart, Matt Jackson, turned away three shots while yielding a pair of scores.

"Hufftalin has been playing solid all season," said Zitzke. "Even when we were down a goal his confidence and leadership has been exceptional and the team really responded to that."

The Rangers close out their season-opening four-game homestand on Sunday, hosting Drury University at 12 p.m.
